St John’s Notes 24th
April
Congratulations to St Malachy’s
under-16s for their achievement in
bringing an All-Ireland back to these
parts with
a convincing 2-14 to 2-07 victory over
Kerry’s Rathmore Community
School. David Milling and Gerard
McAnulty started in defence, Conor
Flanagan in midfield, Ryan Flanagan in
attack and with
Conor Braniff coming on as a substitute
there are five young Johnnies who can
now say that they played in, and won, an
All-Ireland final. Knowing them they
will use this as a stepping stone and
continue to try to improve their game.
Congratulations to Davis, Gerard, Conor,
Ryan and Conor.
The senior footballers collected four
league points from two away fixtures
last week. They had fairly easy games
against Killyleagh (1-05 v 3-19) on
Monday and against Aughlisnafin (1-04 v
4-21) last Thursday but expected a
tougher encounter on Monday when we
entertained Bredagh. We don’t have a
game this Friday but are away twice next
week, to
St Paul’s on Monday and Ballykinlar on
Friday (5th).
The reserves also got off to a winning
start in their home game against St
Paul’s on Sunday evening (5-14 v 3-4).
The reserves travel to Darragh Cross
this Sunday.
The minors were at home to Drumaness and
went down by 1-10 to 0-07 without
the St Malachy’s contingent. A strong
final quarter proved to be “too little,
too late” and left them to rue missed
opportunities
earlier in the game. This evening we are
away, but
it is only a short trip to Dromara. Next
Wednesday we are at home again to the
Dundrum/Ballykinlar combine. This was
scheduled as the last game of the league
but there are still outstanding fixtures
with
Dromara and Teconnaught (at home) and
Drumaness (away) to be accommodated.
The under-16 and under-14 leagues also
started this week. The under-16s opening
game was postponed so their first action
was last night when they travelled to
Downpatrick.
That postponed fixture will now be
played this Saturday (29th)
in Burren at 3.00pm. Next Tuesday has
been set aside for the opening
championship games.
The under-14s opened with
a trip to Carryduff in the A league last
Thursday and got the hard game they
expected. Trailing by five points at
half-time the team produced a strong
second period and got back to level
pegging but the final and deciding point
went to Carryduff (4-08 v 3-10). We are
at home to Bryansford tomorrow evening.
Training for the under-12 footballers
continues on Friday evenings at 5.00pm
and for the under-10s and under-8s on
Saturday mornings (11.00 to 12.00).
The camogie league started on Monday
when our team travelled to Liatroim. We
follow this up with
the visit
of Longstone on Monday coming.
The Ladies football team have been
working hard in preparation for the
start of their league on May 3rd.
The club’s monthly bulletin was
distributed on Monday evening at the
Bredagh game, and there should be enough
copies to go around the camogie and
ladies football squads as well. If you
haven’t received your copy please
contact Kevin McGlynn (028 4481 1876).
There will be a presentation on our
Sports Development Plan on Thursday 25th
May at 8.00pm. Believe
it or not, this is the first free
evening – and
its
only free because the under-14s have a
bye then.
Lottery
numbers for 20th were 1, 9,
17 and 21. There were five £10 winners
and the jackpot now stands at £1,950.
Friday
night promises to be a treat for those
interested in the cultural side of our
activities.
There will be performances from of the
best Scor and Scor na nÓg competitors
in the county from 8.30pm. This is a
celebration rather than a competition.
There is no charge and there will be a
light supper.
