St John’s Notes 3rd April

St John’s Notes         3rd April

Conor and Ryan Flanagan, Gerard McAnulty, Conor Braniff and David Milling will all have to wait another week before the St Malachy’s under-16’s All Ireland final. This was postponed from Sunday past to this Saturday. Best of luck to all the team.

St Malachy’s under-14 team were unable to repeat the Ulster success of their seniors in the McDevitt Cup Final when they went down to St Ciaran’s of Tyrone, with some fella Canavan doing a lot of the damage. Where have we heard that before? Still it’s quite an achievement to win the county title and get this far so Darren Savage, Declan Gilmore, Conor Morgan, Daniel McKay, Hugh Flanagan and Darren Burns can all be proud of their contributions along the way. Best of all they will bring that experience back for the benefit of to the club.

The minors’ home game with Teconnaught on Sunday was postponed. Fixtures now shift from Sunday to Wednesday evenings and the team are away to Bredagh this evening. The minors AND UNDER-16s are now training at the field on Tuesday and Friday evenings at 6.30pm. The under-16 league starts on Tuesday 18th April.

Our under-14s had a challenge game at home to Longstone on Saturday and had another good work-out. It was Longstone’s first game of the season and if they had put away more of their second half opportunities they could have asked more questions of the home side. As it was St John’s won with something to spare, but it was a good run out in preparation for the start of the league on Thursday 20th April. This Saturday its back to training again (12.15 to 13.30pm). There is the possibility of another challenge game the week after (15th April). If not it will be training as usual.

Ladies football training is on Wednesday evenings at the field at 6.30pm. Training for the under-10s and under-8s continues on Saturdays at 11.00am. The under-12s now train on Fridays at 5.00pm.

Lottery numbers for 30th were 2, 5, 11 and 28. There was just one £10 winner and the jackpot now stands at £1,750.

The next Poker Night will be on Wednesday 12th April (not change of day as this is Holy Week).

The big draw was held after the last race, with the winners drawn by Iain Duff, manager of Downpatrick Racecourse. The top prize of £8,000 went to D & S Braniff, H McMullan picked up £1,000 and the each way prizes of £100 went to N McGreevy, P Dornan, J Flynn, R McChesney, PJ McKinney, D Burns, P Walsh, S Quinn, G Rogan and M Morgan.

We wish Kevin Savage a pleasant trip as he packs his bags for the Master International Rules tour to Australia. Kevin has given the club many years sterling service as a player and his selection for the Ireland team is a fitting reward.
