St John’s Notes 3rd May
We open a new chapter in our history
this evening when St John’s Ladies host
Newry Shamrocks in our first match in
the Ladies Football League. This is the
first competitive match for this team
after a couple of challenge games at the
end of last year and over the past
couple of weeks. Out of little acorns,
tall oaks grow – best of luck to Jackie
and the squad this evening and for the
rest of the campaign.
The camogie team were disappointed to
lose by one point in their opening
fixture over in Liatroim, but won a
challenge game against An Riocht last
Wednesday so the team were in good
spirits going into Monday’s home game
with Longstone. We are scheduled to have
a bye this Monday and are away to
Aghaderg on Monday 15th.
Our senior footballers were unable to keep up their winning
momentum when they came up against
Bredagh last Monday. They kept things
fairly close in the first half (0-4 v
1-6) but weren’t able to contain the
city men in the second period. Bredagh
had four strong players around the
middle, and with
Derry’s Enda Gormley supplying the front
line with clever possession, they ran
out comfortable winners (0-5 to 1-14).
The team had a tough away trip to St
Paul’s on Monday evening, are away again
to Ballykinlar on Friday and entertain
Dromara next Monday.
The reserves game away to Darragh Cross was postponed on
Sunday. Their next scheduled league game
is home to Castlewellan on Sunday week
(14th).
With the St Malachy’s adventure behind them the minor team
produced several great displays at the
East Down 7s before running out of
stream against Kilcoo in the overall
final. They followed this up with 2-10
to 0-09 win away to Dromara. We travel
to Ballykinlar this evening for the last
listed league game, but with postponed
fixtures against Dromara and Teconnaught
(both home) and Drumaness (away) to be
rescheduled, there is time to get a run
of good performances together in
preparation for the championship.
Our under-16s produced an excellent performance but didn’t
get the points away to Downpatrick in
their opening
All County league game last Tuesday
(2-10 v 0-13). The travelled to Burren
on Saturday and produced another
excellent performance, coming from ten
point down at the break and probably
deserved a share of the spoils but
couldn’t quite close the gap (2-11 v
0-15). Next week has been set aside for
preliminary round championship games,
before we entertain Kilcoo in the league
on Tuesday 9th.
Our under-14s produced a fine first half display at home to
Bryansford but were unable to sustain
this in the second period. In the end
Bryansford were deserving victors though
they were flattered by the 3-11 to 1-08
scoreline. We travel to Kilcoo tomorrow
evening and entertain Downpatrick next
week.
Our under-12 footballers will get their first taste of “Go
Games” this Friday when they travel to
Ballykinlar to play in a
“curtain-raiser” before the senior’s
game. Players are to be at our pitch at
5.00pm. Training for the under-10s and
under-8s continues on Saturday mornings
(11.00 to 12.00).
The club’s monthly bulletin was distributed last Monday
evening at the senior game, and also at
the various training sessions and
matches through the week. If you haven’t
received your copy please contact Kevin
McGlynn (028 4481 1876).
There will be a presentation on our Sports Development Plan
on Thursday 25th May at
8.00pm.
There
will be a Poker Night on Friday 12th.
There
were three £10 winners in last
Thursday’s lottery. The numbers were 3,
16, 21 and 23 and the jackpot now stands
at £2,000.
We
extend our condolences to the family and
friends of Maureen Walsh. May she Rest
in Peace.
