St John’s Notes 9th
Aug
Our minors enjoyed championship success
last Wednesday. They made a winning
return to action when they overcame
Bredagh away (1-07 v 2-06). This was as
close as the scoreline suggests and
Bredagh led at the interval (0-5 v 0-4).
In the end it was two penalty kicks that
decided the outcome, Bredagh missed
their opportunity but Gerard McAnulty
rifled his chance to the back of the
net.
The St John’s Ladies Footballers
travelled to St Michael’s for their
first ever championship game on Saturday
but were unable to replicate the minor’s
success. In spite of a second half rally
they went down 5-12 to 2-07. It is all
part of the learning curve for this
young team.
Saturday was a busy day at
St John’s.
The under-15s travelled to Carryduff to
take part in the Óg Sport competition
with 15 other teams. They had a good day
out advancing to the Shield semi-final
when their run was ended by Rostrevor.
The under-12s were taking part in the
Edward Toner Memorial Tournament in
Castlewellan. With a number of players
borrowed from the under-10s they were
unable to follow in the footsteps of
last year’s team which made it to the
final.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch as they
say, the under-10s were hosting Kilclief,
Loughinisland and
St Paul’s
in a Go Games blitz. There was a lot of
good football on show in six close
encounters.
On top of all that there were a number
of club members taking part in various
Down Development squads, either as
players or coaches. Yes Saturday was a
busy day. I need a holiday.
Our senior footballers suffered two
defeats on their travels last week. They
went down to league leaders
St Paul’s on Monday and again to
Ballykinlar on Friday. There were a
number of players missing through injury
but that defeat, by a four point margin,
was unexpected. We are not involved in
the preliminary round of the
championship so our next scheduled game
is home league match against Dromara on
Friday 18th.
Our reserves travelled to Saul on
Sunday. Their next game is at home to
Drumaness on Sunday 20th.
The
St John’s
camogie team took another large step
towards promotion when they won away in
Liatroim last Thursday (4-11 v 5-01).
Liatroim were the only team to have got
one over on the Johnnies with a one
point win in the previous encounter but
that damage has now been restored. We
were away to Ballygalget on Monday
evening, then entertain Darragh Cross on
Monday coming and are away to Dromara
the Monday after (21st). We
also have a postponed fixture to be
rescheduled (at home to Dromara).
Our under-16s are due back in league
action when we entertain Mayobridge on
Tuesday and then travel to Castlewellan
the following Tuesday.
Our under-14s returned to league action
last Thursday when we were at home to
Kilcoo, fresh from their exploits in the
All Ireland Feile. This Kilcoo team have
travelled the length of the county
winning as they go and it was no
different on their trip to
St John’s. Kilcoo put on an exhibition
of passing in the first half – I’m sure
that there were more scores than
toe-taps. The second half was a closer
affair with scores for St John’s for
Darren Savage, Darren Burns, Kevin
Keenan, Hugh Flanagan, Chris McKay and
Ruairi McGlynn. Their next scheduled
game is away to Downpatrick on Thursday
17th. They have two
outstanding fixtures to be rescheduled,
away to Kilcoo and to Bryansford.
Under-10 training has moved from its
Saturday morning slot to Friday evening
at
5.00pm.
There was one £10 winner last week when
the lottery numbers were 1, 10, 11 and
14. The jackpot is now £1,200.
There
will be a Cul Camp at St John’s from Mon
14th to 18th
August. Application forms can be
downloaded from the county website
www.downgaa.net and can be given to
any St John’s juvenile mentor with a
cheque for £35. Early reports from clubs
which have already run camps have been
very positive.
Club
shorts and socks are available from Pep
Keenan (028 4377 8712).
There
will be a Poker Night in the clubrooms
this Friday (11th).
There
will be a Sports Day on Sunday 20th
August. There will be a meeting tonight
at 9.00pm and again next Wednesday to
organise this and associated events. All
ideas and helpers are welcome. Contact
Rory McMullan (028 4377 1216) or Shan
Brennan (028 4481 1684) for further
details.
We
extend our deepest sympathy to the
family and friends of Francis Braniff.
May he Rest in Peace.
