St John’s v Kilclief, Loughinisland,
St Paul’s
5th Aug 2006
Kilclief, Loughinisland,
St Paul’s and host St John’s combined to
produce some lively football on Saturday
morning. It was a very warm morning but
that didn’t slow the play, or melt the
enthusiasm of these young teams.
In the case of
St John’s it was a particularly young
team as some of the more experienced
hands had been given permission to
travel with the under-12s to
Castlewellan. That created the
opportunity for some of the brighter
prospects from the under-8s to step up
and Mark Murphy, Danielle O’Connor and
Cameron Mooney did not disappoint.
As it turned out all six games were close encounters, played
in a good spirit, with no more that a
few points separating any of the teams
at the final whistle.
The opening games saw
St Paul’s take on Loughinisland while
Kilclief took the field against hosts St
John’s. The hosts played well and were
able to move the ball forward well on
several occasions – a big improvement on
their previous outing. But Kilclief were
able to give as good as they got and
were a couple of scores ahead before
Michael McMullan netted for St John’s’
opening score. The result was a terrific
entertaining contest.
St John’s improvement continued in their
second game against Loughinisland, who
also had players at the Castlewellan
tournament. Loughinisland opened the
scoring before Ciaran McKay got St
John’s opening score with a goal. Sam
Walsh and Michael McMullan combined well
in midfield and linked with Darren Kelly
and Gavin Lively in moving the ball
forward as they took a number of scores.
Jerome Gordon, Francis Lynch and Sean
O’Neill marked well in defence but
Loughinisland were able to get scores
too. Indeed they might have sneaked the
result at the close but for another
excellent save from Michael Kelly.
Despite switching the team around for their final game
against
St Paul’s, St John’s continued to play
quality football and had the better of
the first half as Conall McPoland and
Michael McCourt set up scores for
Francis Lynch and Jerome Gordon.
However, the second half was a
disappointment for the hosts as they
forgot about marking and allowed St
Paul’s time and space to knock over a
number of points.
Many thanks to Cormac McMullan for refereeing, to Henry
O’Hare and Malachy Sharvin for
organising the games, to those who
helped to set up and take down the Go
Games pitches and to those who provided
a welcome cup of tea and a sandwich at
the close of proceedings.
