St John’s Notes 30th
Aug
Bronagh McCullough has made quite an
impression on the camogie field and more
recently on the football pitch this last
year but she is now turning her
attention to a different sport. She is
for the high jump on Friday! We extend
our best wishes for her big match.
The camogie team advanced to the
championship final with an away victory
over Dromara (2-01 v 4-08) last Monday.
The final will probable be in
mid-September with the opposition
provided by either Longstone or
Ballygalget. There are also three
outstanding league games; home and away
against Dromara and at home to Darragh
Cross.
Our senior championship hopes were
short-lived against favourites Bredagh
in the quarter-final at Darragh Cross
last Thursday. Bredagh won comfortably
(2-19 v 0-06) and must now be hot
favourites to add the Junior
Championship to their Division Four
title. The senior team have three league
games to play yet – home and away to
Dromara and away to St Michael’s.
Our minors built upon their championship
success away to Bredagh (1-07 v 2-06) by
beating Teconnaught at home (5-11 v
3-04) in the quarter-final. The
semi-final maybe played this evening,
probably at a neutral venue against
Longstone, Clonduff or Ardglass. So long
as it is only one of those the Johnnies
will be in with a chance.
Our under-16s lost out at home to
Bryansford last week and travelled to
Newry Bosco yesterday. They have three
outstanding league fixtures; away to
Kilcoo, home to Mayobridge and away to
Castlewellan.
Our under-14s had a bye last week so
they were unable to build upon their
success in their previous outing away to
Downpatrick (2-04 v 4-11). They are at
home to Castlewellan tomorrow evening
and follow this up with a trip to
Bredagh. There is also an away game with
Kilcoo to be rearranged.
Our under-12s travelled to Kilclief on
Sunday for the latest Go Games
encounter. This tie had produced some
outstanding games over the last two or
three years and this game matched those
for skill, commitment and excitement.
The players definitely deserved their
ice-cream on the way home! Under-12 and
under-10 training is now on Friday
evenings at 5.00pm.

Our under-8s, and even quite number of
under-6s, had a great day out on
Saturday when we hosted an underage
blitz and welcomed Drumaness, Kilcoo,
Loughinisland and Teconnaught to Pairc
Naomh Eoin. The benefits of Go Games
were obvious at this early age. As
players were restricted to zones they
held positions rather than chase after
the ball. This allowed individuals time
in possession to demonstrate their
skills and space to look for colleagues
to pass to. The one touch restriction
meant that players combined to move the
ball forward and everyone opportunities
in possession. The result was that there
was a lot of terrific football played by
energetic and enthusiastic youngsters.
They enjoyed their day and so did the
large crowd of parents and supporters.
Many thanks to our young referees;
Cormac McMullan, Daniel McKay, Ryan
Gordon and Neil Magorrian.

Club
shorts and socks are available from Pep
Keenan (028 4377 8712). There are also a
number of club jackets available from
the same source – ones that have been
left behind after training etc.
There was one £10 winner last week when the lottery numbers
were 17, 18, 22 and 23. The jackpot is
now £1,100.
The next committee meeting is on Monday 4th
September.
And last but not least – congratulations to Gerard McAnulty
who has represented
Ulster under-16s at UCD last weekend. We
have had a number of players
representing the county before, but
Gerard is the first to make the step up
to the provincial level.
