St John’s Notes 19th
July
Ladies get pride of place this week after their fantastic
2-06 v 1-03 win away to
St Paul’s.
This victory was richly deserved on the
night as the team played with great
gusto and just reward for their work and
persistence all year. We need to build
upon this success with high turnouts for
training and matches.
Our camogie team were back in action on Monday when they
entertained Aghaderg in the league
hoping to continue their push for
promotion.
Our senior footballers had a run out in the Connolly Cup at
Ballykinlar but they slipped to a defeat
against division three high fliers
Ardglass (2-13 to 1-03). The seniors
will be back in league action when we
travel to neighbours Aughlisnafin on
Sunday 23rd and then to
Bredagh on Friday 28th (this
was originally listed as a home game,
but an earlier game was switched). Our
reserves are back in action on July 23rd
when they are at home to Ardglass.
Our minors return to action after an even longer gap when
they travel to either Bredagh or St
Josephs in the championship on Wednesday
2nd August. As a team they
may be rusty but individually the
players have been kept busy pushing into
the senior and reserve sides and for the
younger ones with the under-16s.
Our under-16s’ A championship quarter final away to
Bryansford was postponed with no new
date set as yet. We return to league
action with a trip to Kilcoo on 25th
July.
Our under-14s are not scheduled to return to league action
until 3rd August when we are
at home to Kilcoo. They have two
outstanding fixtures to be rescheduled,
away to Kilcoo and to Bryansford.
Our under-10s travelled to Liatroim this Saturday to take
part in the Pat Dole Memorial
Tournament. Players should meet at the
club at 9.45am and we anticipate being
back at about 2.30pm. Players should
bring a bottle of water, a packed lunch
and £1.50 for the bus. This is a
nine-a-side tournament and we are
limited to twelve players – preference
will be given on the basis of attendance
at training and age. Then it will be
back to training on the following
Saturday (29th) 10.30 to
11.30am, before we host the next
under-10 Go Games Blitz on August 5th.
Lightening might strike twice does but it didn’t hit a third
time- just for a change nobody matched
the lucky numbers – 3, 12, 21 and 24 –
although two players matched three and
got £10 each. The jackpot is now £1,050.
New Zealand’s five times World Champion David Fagan can now
add the Drumnaquoile Speed Shearing
competition to his fifteen New Zealand
national “Golden Shears” titles after a
very enjoyable competition at a crowded
St John’s on Saturday night. He topped
an all star cast featuring champions
from five countries. His winning time of
18.73 seconds was not far off his world
record time of 17.94 seconds.

We would
like to thank Gerard Magorrian for his
recent work putting up brackets to store
our Go Games goalposts so that we can
make better use of the space available.
There
will be a Cul Camp at St John’s from Mon
14th to 18th
August. Application forms can be
downloaded from the county website
www.down.gaa.ie and can be
given to any
St John’s mentor with a cheque
for £35. Early reports from clubs which
have already run camps have been very
positive.
Good
luck to the hurlers against Carlow on
Saturday – they are just 70 minutes away
from a trip to Croke Park.
