July
St John’s eased their way to another
league win to keep their promotion push
very much on track on a balmy evening at
Pairc Naomh Eoin.
St John’s
proved to be more than a match for the
visitors in all departments and won with
something to spare.

Aghaderg were first on the attack but
the first scores went to Bronagh
McCullough and Martina Cunningham (goal)
before Aghaderg sent a couple of efforts
wide of the posts. Then Sileen McDonald
made progress down the right and sent
over a high ball into the centre.
Siobhan McGeown plucked this from the
air and fired to the net. From then on
there was no looking back for
St John’s.

Martina Cunningham added a point and
then Bronagh McCullough added another
when she ran onto Siobhan McGeown’s
cutback. Aghaderg then got their only
score of the first half when they
pointed a “45”. Sileen McDonald
cancelled this out but Aghaderg might
have reduced the arrears is a shot had
not cannoned off back off the goalpost.
At the interval
St John’s had a commanding 2-4 to 0-1
lead.
St John’s didn’t lose any momentum for
Bronagh McCullough struck again shortly
after the break, this time from wide on
the left. Another goal followed, albeit
fortuitously as a wicked bounce deceived
the Aghaderg keeper, before Aghaderg got
another point. Bronagh McCullough was
generally well policed by Aobhán
O’Neill, but managed to get free to fire
another shot in which found its way into
the net before Grainne McCann pointed a
free.

Aghaderg rallied briefly then but
Kelly-Anne McCullough and Julie Brown
were up to the challenge and Ann
Cunningham’s catching improved as the
game wore on. Because of their efforts,
combined with Laura Smyth and Julie
Brown, Aghaderg were restricted to a
brace of wides and one further point. At
the other end
St John’s
netted again and fired over points
seemingly at will as they added another
couple of points to reinforce their
league position.
