Castlewellan 3-20 v 2-05
St John’s
Thu 1/6/06
Castlewellan proved to be too sharp for their visitors in
this under-14 A league clash. It was
their knack of being out first for the
ball, in all areas of the field, which
provided the platform for their victory.
St John’s played well at times and moved the ball quickly in possession, their
problem being that they could not win
enough of that possession in the first
place.
There was nothing between the sides in the opening quarter as
Conor Morgan pointed for the Johnnies
either sides of points for the home
side. But then Castlewellan came into
the ascendancy with seven unanswered
scores, and the first of those was a
goal fired in off the inside of the
post. During that period
St John’s
were unable to escape from their own 45.
When they did eventually break out Harry
McMullan and Ruairi McGlynn combined to
set Chris McKay up for a point. Almost
immediately Philip Brennan netted to
reduce the margin to five and to give
the visitors hope. However, that was as
close as the side got as Castlewellan
knocked over another three points before
the interval.
Darren Savage goaled shortly after the restart but the home
side responded with two points to quash
any hopes of a revival. Chris McKay
added two scores John’s, the first from
a 13m free and the second a splendid
point from distance, but
St John’s
weren’t to score again for the last
quarter. Instead it was Castlewellan who
put on an exhibition of point taking to
come away as comfortable winners.
