St John’s Notes - 8th June 2006

St John’s Notes         7th June

Congratulations to Darren Morgan and Kevin Keenan who played for Down in the Primary schools game in Ballybofey on Sunday at half-time in the Down v Donegal match.

Our camogie team continued their winning sequence with an away win over Darragh Cross last Monday. We now have two home games and both a re local derbies. We welcomed Dromara on Monday and are at home again to Liatroim next Monday, hoping to set right the opening day reverse by one point.

Our ladies football team entertained Carryduff last Thursday and although they took some excellent points they found that the visitors had too many attacking options.

Our senior footballers were at home to Bredagh on Friday and although they played well at stages of the game they were unable to deflect the league leaders from their unbeaten record. We are at home to St Paul’s this Friday.

Our reserves were beaten away by Dundrum (2-14 v 0-09) on Sunday week ago. They weren’t scheduled to play again until they travel to Carryduff this Sunday, but have a postponed match (away to Darragh Cross) to be rescheduled.

Our minors still have two postponed fixtures to be rescheduled, against Teconnaught (home) and Drumaness (away). Although Loughinisland have deservedly won the league it would be a pity if these games don’t get played as they would be good preparation for the championship when we play Kilcoo at home in the first round at home on Wednesday 21st June.

Our under-16s travelled to Bryansford last Tuesday and put in a fine performance, especially in the first half. Bryansford had the better of the second half and won comfortable in the end (3-15 v 2-07). We were in championship action on Tuesday evening when we travelled to Teconnaught in the first round proper. Our next league matches are at to Newry Bosco next Tuesday and then away to Burren the week after.

Our under-14s travelled to Castlewellan last Thursday and were given a demonstration of how important it is to be first to the ball. We trailed throughout but a goal by Darren Savage on the restart reduced the margin to two scores but could not build upon this mini-revival so that the home side won by some distance (3-20 v 2-05). We are at home to Bredagh tomorrow evening, and will be hoping to compete for the ball better. This game will complete first half of league games (except with a trip to Kilcoo still outstanding).

There was no game the under-12s on Sunday because of the Down v Donegal game. Training for the under-12s continues on Fridays at 5.00pm.

The under-10s played in their first Go Games blitz in Liatroim on Saturday and enjoyed three games against Liatroim (twice) and Bryansford. We played well on each occasion and with points counting as two and goals as three scores quickly mounted and the lead changed hands often. One of the unexpected benefits of Go Games was that, on the hottest day of the year, the rotation of players meant that all got a rest at some stage and then rejoined the fray refreshed. The next under-10 blitz is scheduled for Saturday 1st July.

Training for the under-10s and under-8s continues on Saturday mornings, 10.30 to 11.30am.

There will be a Poker Night this Friday in the clubrooms. A light supper will be served.
