St John’s Notes 10th
May
Congratulations to our Ladies football
team made their league debut on Saturday
evening when we entertained
St Paul’s, in our first ever competitive
fixture. Although we played some good
football the visitors took a four points
to no score lead at the break. Our
football was more effective in the
second half as points from Louise Murray
(2), Aine McClean and a goal from Rachel
Mills gave us the advantage.
St Paul’s
closed the gap but it looked like we
would hold out for a winning debut, but
St Paul’s
got their equaliser in the final
minutes. A share of the spoils was
probably a fair result and our girls
will be pleased to have got some reward
from their opening game.
Congratulations also to James Walsh who
made his down debut at
Casement
Park
on Sunday in the schools game at the
interval. I’m sure that was a welcome
fillip for the family at a painful time.
Our ladies’ belated debut was one of
very few played last week as our
activities were curtailed by a series of
bereavements, with ladies football (home
to Newry Shamrocks in what would have
been the first ever league game),
camogie (home v Longstone), senior (a v
St Paul’s and a v Ballykinlar), reserve
(a v Darragh Cross) and under-14s (a v
Kilcoo) all being postponed. We would
like to repeat our sympathies to the
families of the bereaved and also record
our appreciation of the people who took
the time to set up and then clear up
after meals at the club.
Our minors played their last scheduled
league game away to the Ballykinlar and
Dundrum combine and went down by eight
points. There are still three postponed
fixtures to be rescheduled, against
Dromara and Teconnaught (both home) and
Drumaness (away), so there is time to
get a run of good performances together
in preparation for the championship. We
play in the first round on at home to
Kilcoo on Wed 21st June.
Our under-14s competed in the Feile na
Peile on Saturday and advanced to the
county finals this Saturday in Hilltown,
after victories over Longstone (by 2
points) and Mayobridge (by 3) in a
couple of close encounters. In the
meantime we are at home to Downpatrick
in the league tomorrow evening.
The under-12s had their first experience
of Go Games on Friday evening past when
they travelled to Ballykinlar. Everyone
played well in two 9-a-side games. The
players found the change of positions to
be disruptive, but they will get used to
that as they develop their all round
games.
Our seniors returned to action again on
Monday when they entertained neighbours
Dromara – this is the last of the
scheduled Monday evening fixtures. We
travel to St Michael’s this Friday
before entertaining Killyleagh next
Friday in what is the first game of the
second round of fixtures. Our reserves
are at home to Castlewellan this Sunday.
Our under-16s had no game last week as
they were not involved in the
preliminary round of the championship.
They returned to action yesterday when
they entertained Kilcoo. Their next game
is away to Mayobridge on Tuesday coming.
The camogie team were scheduled to have
a bye this Monday but were trying to get
the postponed fixture with Longstone
rearranged for then. They are away to
Aghaderg on next Monday.
Training for the under-10s shifted to
Saturday afternoon (4.30 to 5.30pm) to
accommodate the U-14 Feile and will stay
at that time this week, before moving
back to the mornings. Under-8s training
has been cancelled until we return to
the mornings next weekend.
If any one wishes to receive our monthly
bulletin they should Kevin McGlynn (028
4481 1876). Annual subscription is £5 to
cover printing costs.
There will be a presentation on our
Sports Development Plan on Thursday 25th
May at 8.00pm.
There
is a Poker Night this Friday.
The
lottery numbers were 2, 5, 20 and 28.
There was only one £10 winner and the
jackpot now stands at £2,050.
We
extend our condolences to the family and
friends of Mary Morgan. May she Rest in
Peace.
