St John’s Notes 4th
Oct

Some of the St John's
FUNdamentals squad who received Go Games
footballs at the close of their
seasons's training. The balls were
sponsored by NDOLA Dog Grooming and
Kennels and by Spa Pallet Services.
These young footballers will have every
opportunity to practice their skills
over the winter months
- but only once their homework has
been done.
St John’s minors met Longstone on Sunday
in the replay of their championship
semi-final and once again they produced
a thriller. If anything this was even
better than the first helping – but it
is the Longstone lads who advance to the
final with a two point advantage after
two hours of great football (3-16 v
4-11). Unlike the first encounter the
Johnnies were in the driving seat for
most of the game only to be denied at
the death by a late ‘Stone surge. The
young St John’s team were three points
to the good at the turnaround, and had
increased this to five with about five
minutes of regulation time remaining,
only to see this lead eroded away at the
death. Good luck to Longstone in the
final.
Attention now turn to the St John’s
camogie team who overcame Dromara at
home in the league on the Sunday before.
If they can repeat the dose in the
return fixture they will face a playoff
with Liatroim for the league title. So
there is the prospect of a double for
the girls as they are also gearing up
for a championship final. The other
semi-final, between Longstone and
Ballygalget was scheduled for Sunday
past, with the final pencilled in for
this Sunday (8th).
Our FUNdamental training sessions come
to an end on Friday with the last drills
for the under-12s, under-10s and
under-8s. All those present were
presented with a Go Games football so
that they can continue to practice their
skills over the winter recess. The
footballs were sponsored by NDOLA Dog
Grooming and Kennels and by Spa Pallet
Services.
The under-10 then rounded their season
off with some impressive performances at
the Teconnaught Go Games Blitz when they
came up against Dundrum, Liatroim and
hosts Teconnaught. For eight of the nine
on the “A” team this was their last
experience as under-10 footballers, but
they showed enough talent to suggest
that they will also do well at the next
level in the new year. On the day, Gavin
Marmion was the pick of the bunch,
working well in all areas of the field,
winning good possession, pressuring the
opposition and having a great success
rate in finding team-mates with his
passes. All of the “B” team have at
least another year at this level and
with the likes of Sean O’Neill, Michael
McCourt and Ciaran McKay on board they
produced some very satisfying football
in their three games, and will surely
only improve as they come to take centre
stage in the coming years.
The under-12s will hopefully have a game
or two as well to bring down the curtain
on their season.
As activity on the field winds down it
is time to turn our attention to
cultural aspects of Scor and Scór
na nÓg. Dancing continues in the
clubrooms on Mondays at 8.00pm, with one
eye on the East Down semi-finals on 29th
October and 5th November.
Pep Keenan (4377 8712) has received a
delivery of shorts for 5-6 and 7-8 age
groups. She will also be running a
Christmas club between now and the end
of the year.
The next committee meeting will be on
Monday 9th October
There will be a Poker Night on Friday 13th.
