St John’s Notes 13th

The camogie team had a comfortable win over Darragh Cross
last Wednesday. There are two
outstanding games, home and away against
Dromara standing between them and the
league title. The girls recently
overcame Dromara to progress to the
championship final. There is no date
fixed for this - the opposition will be
provided by either Longstone or
Ballygalget.
Our minors are also looking forward to championship action
with their semi-final against Longstone
scheduled for 24th September
(at a venue to be determined). The other
semi-final pairing sees Clonduff take on
Ardglass.
Our seniors had a comfortable win over Dromara on Friday
evening (3-16 v 0-06) in a game that had
an end of season feel about it. There
are outstanding league games away to St
Michael’s and Dromara.
Our under-16s were disappointed not to get at least a share
of the points away to Castlewellan on
Sunday. They deservedly led by 2-3 to
0-4 at the interval. They extended the
lead upon the restart but Castlewellan
whittled away at their lead. They drew
level with a couple of minutes remaining
and it looked like the sides would take
even shares of the spoils as they had
done on their previous meeting. However,
Aidan O’Neill delivered a cruel blow
when he netted in the second minute of
added time. The only remaining game for
the under-16s is a home tie with
Mayobridge.
Our under-14s travelled to
Boucher Road, Belfast, to play Bredagh
last Thursday in their penultimate game
but came home disappointed. The first
half was close and would have been
closer but for poor finishing by St
John’s but with the half-time score at
3-3 to 2-1 it was all to play for in the
second period. It was Bredagh, though,
who upped their performance in the
second period and ran out very
comfortable winners by 6-13 to 2-06. The
under-14s’ only outstanding game is an
away league fixture with Kilcoo.
Our under-12s entertained Saul in two excellent games on
Sunday morning. “Entertain” is the
appropriate word as the teams were well
matched in terms of numbers and ability.
And also equal in the commitment to
display their undoubted skills in a very
productive manner.
The weekend before there were a number of disappointed
footballers at the club when the
under-10 GoGames blitz fell victim to
the weather. Perhaps they were hoping to
get soaked, catch a cold and get a few
more days off school! There is no date
set yet for this blitz. Training for
under-10 and under-12s continues Friday
evenings at
5.00pm.
There were two £10 winners on 31st August when the
lottery numbers were 8, 14, 15 and 23.
The numbers drawn on 7th
September were 8, 14, 25 and 26. There
was one £10 winner and the jackpot now
stands at £1,200.
The next management committee meeting will be on Monday 18th
September.
There will be training sessions over the next couple of
weekends for juvenile girls at
St John’s. This will include camogie,
ladies football, rounders, whatever –
you decide! This is open to all
secondary school age girls, including
those who are not existing members of
the club. This will start this Saturday
(16th) at 2.00pm. Any of the
club’s existing coaches who would like
to be involved are invited to come along
at this time too. Hopefully some of the
senior players from camogie and ladies
football panels will take up this
invitation too. For further information
please contact Kevin McGlynn (4481
