St John’s under-14s toppled by Castlewellan

St John’s
2-05 v 6-24
Castlewellan Thu 31st Aug
Castlewellan proved to have too much ammunition for St John’s
on a rain-soaked evening, as they kept
some pressure on Kilcoo at the top of
the A league.
St John’s were on the back-foot more or
less from the off as Castlewellan were
much better at stringing passes together
and moving the ball forward. In contrast
St John’s often had bother clearing
their lines and struggled to get the
ball out of their half.
Conor Morgan and Jamie Artt were able to win a share of Chris
Feenan’s kick-outs and advance the ball
but too often possession was turned over
and the visitors were able to launch
another attack. When Daniel McKay was
moved out to the half-back line in the
second period
St John’s were able to win more
possession but that respite didn’t last
as he was forced to retire injured.
When Castlewellan did get possession they were able to make
good use of it and took some excellent
points from distance. They were able to
push through for a couple of goals after
between the tenth and fifteenth minutes
and their seemed to be little doubt over
the result from that stage.
It was St John’s
who opening the scoring when Ruairi
McGlynn’s drive clipped the bar on its
way over. Castlewellan had scored 2-5
before St John’s scored again as Chris
McKay netted after Darren Savage’s shot
was parried by the Castlewellan keeper.
Darren Savage was a thorn in Castlewellan’s side with his
pacy direct runs. He was bundled over on
one such run and got up to stroke the
resultant penalty home. That left the
score at 2-1 to 3-7. Castlewellan
stretched their lead to 2-2 to 3-10 at
the break, and with the withdrawal of
Daniel McKay early in the second period
it was chiefly one way traffic from then
on.
