St John’s Notes 22nd August 2007
Sunday will be a busy championship day for
St John’s with both footballers and
camogie players taking to the field.
Our senior footballers take on Bright in
Darragh Cross at 1.00pm. In the league St
Michael’s one point victory over Aghaderg
on Friday secured them the runner-up spot
after unbeaten league winners Drumaness. Presumably
our one outstanding game, at home to Aghaderg,
will not now be played even though a victory
in that might have given us third place.
Supporters will then rush back to Pairc Naomh
Eoin for the camogie championship semi-final
between our girls and Liatroim with An Riocht
waiting for the winners in the final pencilled
in for Sunday week. With seven wins out of
eight in the league our girls have grounds
for confidence but no doubt Eoin Walsh will
be emphasising that the championship is a
different ball game. Congratulations to Sileen
McDonald on her selection for the Ulster Elite
Camogie Camp.
Our reserves advanced in their championship
on Sunday when they beat Down Seniors (1-10
v 0-10). The tie was close throughout but
the Johnnies got the last couple of scores
to see them home.
Our Ladies Footballers had their first experience
of championship football when they entertained
Rostrevor last Tuesday. This was a painful
experience and more work at training will
be required if the team it to continue its
rapoid progress of the last two years. We
have completed the scheduled league season
with only outstanding games to be played –
at home to Ardglass and away to Rostrevor
and Teconnaught.
Our minors had an entertaining draw with
Downpatrick last Monday (1-08 v 0-11). We
travel to Downpatrick on Wednesday 29th and
also have outstanding games with Burren (away)
and Bryansford (home).
Our under-16s were at home to Saul wet evening
last Tuesday. They saved their best football
for the second half but by that stage Saul
had a good lead. Had they not conceded two
easy goals, due in part to the conditions,
the outcome could easily have been different.
We were scheduled to be away to Darragh Cross
yesterday but they, like Dromara, have withdrawn
from the league. That leaves just one home
game against Kilclief to come.
Our under-14s have now had two idle weeks
– first was a bye and then our home
game against Bryansford was postponed last
week. We travel to Castlewellan tomorrow.
Our under-10s are still working hard ahead
of their next Go Games Blitz on September
8th. This will be hosted by St John’s.
There were two £10 winners in last
week’s lottery when the numbers were
8, 15, 18 and 26. The jackpot stands at £2,000.
The Football Development Working Group meet
next Tuesday 28th at 9.30pm.
