St John’s Notes 8th August 2007

St John’s Notes 8th August 2007

Our minors put in a good performance away last week but found Saval were too strong and blocked their advance in the A championship at the quarter-final stage. We are back in league action again this evening when we entertain Downpatrick. We also must travel to Burren and Downpatrick and entertain Bryansford.

Our under-14s championship dreams came unstuck against Bredagh in the A semi-final in Drumaness on Saturday. The teams were well matched in the first half but Bredagh moved into the driving seat in the second period. Our under-14s have a bye in the league tomorrow (9th) but are at home to Bryansford the week after

Our seniors had a comfortable home win over Aughlisnafin last Monday and had a bye on Friday. We have only one league game left - at home to Aghaderg on a date to be arranged. We have a bye in the opening round of the junior championship, which is scheduled for Tuesday 14th August, before taking on Bright (who also got a bye) in the quarter-final.

Our reserves’ game away to Castlewellan was postponed on Sunday. This would have been the last scheduled weekend of league action. Postponed games against Liatroim, Bryansford and Dundrum (all at home) may be rearranged.

Similarly our Ladies Footballers have completed the scheduled league season with only outstanding games to be played. One of those games, at home to Ardglass, was being played last Thursday but was abandoned when Rachel Mills sustained a nasty injury in the second half. We sincerely wish her a full and speedy recovery. There are also away fixtures against Rostrevor and Teconnaught to be rescheduled. The team are also looking forward to their championship.

Our camogs play their final league game this evening away to Newry Shamrocks. This has certainly been a very successful season especially when one considers that we are newly promoted to this division. This success will gives us confidence ahead of the championship. Our next outing is in the championship against the winners of last Wednesday’s opening round tie between Liatroim and Mayobridge. This game is now scheduled for Sunday 26th August, one week later than originally planned.

Our under-16s had a remarkable win away to Bright last Tuesday. It wasn’t unexpected or undeserved so why was it remarkable? Because Daniel McKay featured on the score-sheet, with an outstanding point. We were away to St Joseph’s yesterday (Tue 7th).

Our under-12s didn’t get their scheduled trip to St Paul’s on Sunday and have a bye this weekend.

The Football Development Working Group have decided to defer their workshop / open evening until September, until most people are back from their holidays, as it is important that this is as well attended by members, especially players, as possible.

Last Thursday’s lucky numbers were 2, 11, 20 and 27. There were two £10 winners and the jackpot stands at £1,900.

We will be hosting an Intermediate championship match on Sunday when hen Darragh Cross play Banbridge at 1.00pm.

We extend our sympathy to the family and friends of Theresa Savage. May she Rest in Peace.

Our under-10s enjoyed an extra session on Saturday morning when they were joined by a group of scouts and cubs from Derriaghy. After a few “ice-breakers” all enjoyed some coaching in the basic skills before putting those into practice in a couple of mini-games at under-10 and under-8 levels. Scouts are supposed to be “Ready”, so it shouldn’t have surprised anyone that they took to the games with enthusiasm, and indeed a number of the visitors quickly picked up the skills and so the mini-games were of a high standard. The only downside was that we had no registration forms to hand. The GAA suffered a lot of bad publicity over the course of last week as it emerged that Darren Graham of Lisnaskea Emmets in Fermanagh had been the victim of unacceptable sectarian abuse. The Derriaghy “team” would have been mostly Protestant but they were very welcome at St John’s. At our AGM last November we adopted an “Equality Policy” – it is easy to say that “everyone is welcome” – it is nice to be able to start to demonstrate our welcome.
