St John’s Notes         18th July 2007

Our festival was a great success over the weekend in spite of the changeable weather. Many thanks to all our patrons and of course to all those who have worked so hard behind the scenes.

Our camogs were the only team in league action last week with a rescheduled home fixture against An Riocht last Wednesday. We managed a convincing win (8-14 v 2-05) which makes it six wins out of seven with an away defeat in Portaferry being the only blip. There is only one league game left now - away to Newry Shamrocks on Wednesday 8th August. After that attention will turn to the championship. We have a bye in the opening round and will play either Liatroim or Mayobridge on Sunday 19th August.

Our Ladies Footballers return to league action on Saturday when they travel to Rostrevor. That would have been the last league game but there are fixtures with Ardglass (home) and Teconnaught (away) to be rescheduled.

Our Senior Footballers had a run out in the Connolly Cup last Thursday. We had a bright first half which saw us taken a 0-5 v 0-4 lead but Ardglass dominated the second period and won 2-06 v 0-06 in the end. We have four league games left; at home to St Michael’s (scheduled for Monday 23rd) away to Dromara (scheduled for Friday 27th), at home to Aughlisnafin (Monday 30th) and at home to Aghaderg (to be arranged). Keep an eye on the papers in case there are any changes to these scheduled dates. The opening round of the championship is scheduled for Tuesday 14th August but we have a bye before taking on Bright in the quarter-final.

Our reserves should be at home to Dundrum this Sunday and away to Darragh Cross on Sunday 29th.

Our under-16s will travel to St Joseph’s in the B Championship quarter-final. This was initially scheduled for next Tuesday but will be played on Saturday 28th.

Our under-14s’ postponed game at home to Downpatrick has been rescheduled for tomorrow (Thu 19th). We travel to Bredagh on Thursday 26th and then play Bredagh again in the A Championship semi-final on Saturday 4th August.

Our under-12s travel to Darragh Cross this Sunday and then host Liatroim on Sunday week. The weekend after that should be busy as we hope to take part in the Castlewellan tournament on Saturday 4th and then travel to St Paul’s on Sunday 5th.

Our under-10s will be sending a team to the Pat Doyle Memorial blitz in Liatroim this Saturday (21st). Training for all our under-10s and under-8s will resume on Wednesday 25th. It is important that there is a full turnout that day as the next East Down Blitz is the following Saturday (28th July) when we travel to Drumaness. Under-8s training is from 6.00 - 7.00 pm with the under-10s following from 7.00 – 8.00pm.

We will be hosting a Cúl Camp from 20th to 24th August. Application forms can
be obtained from Kevin McGlynn (078 3596 0804) and can be returned to any of the juvenile mentors. Cheques should be payable to “Down County Board”.

Any juvenile mentors who haven’t yet returned their POC background check forms should do so asap. Those who have mislaid the form should contact Kevin McGlynn (078 3596 0804).

Pep Keenan (4377 8712) now has rain-jackets, tracksuit tops and club rugby shirts in stock

Last Thursday’s lucky numbers were 4, 13, 25 and 27. There were 3 £10 winners and the jackpot stands at £1,700.
