St John’s Notes         23rd July 2007

Our Ladies Footballers away game against Rostrevor was postponed on Saturday. That would have been the last league game but there are fixtures with Ardglass (home) and Teconnaught (away) to be rescheduled. Congratulations to Grainne McCann for making it into the county squad and onto the team for Sunday’s senior championship match against Meath. Unfortunately Meath came out on top in the first game of the round-robin group stages. Well done also to her sister Siobhan McCann and Keevy Burns for getting onto the county under-16 and playing against Donegal last week.

Our camogs have only one league game left now - away to Newry Shamrocks on Wednesday 8th August. We have a bye in the opening round of the championship and then play either Liatroim or Mayobridge on Sunday 19th August. Congratulations to Sileen McDonald on being selected by the county under-16 team as well.

Our Senior Footballers returned to league action when they entertained St Michael’s on Monday evening. After that we have just three games to play:- away to Drumaness (scheduled for this Friday), at home to Aughlisnafin next Monday (30th) and at home to Aghaderg (to be arranged). Keep an eye on the papers in case there are any changes to these scheduled dates. We have a bye in the opening round of the championship, which is scheduled for Tuesday 14th August, before taking on Bright in the quarter-final.

We will be hosting an Intermediate championship double header when Darragh Cross play Banbridge (1.00pm) and Saval take on Kilclief (2.30pm) on Sunday 12th August.

Our reserves were at home to Dundrum on Sunday and are away to Darragh Cross this Sunday and away again to Castlewellan the Sunday after.

Some of our underage teams are now turning their attention to their respective championships. Our minors travel to Banbridge this evening (Wednesday) for their postponed game. Our under-16s go to St Joseph’s on Saturday (28th) for their B championship quarter-final and our under-14s play Bredagh in the A Championship semi-final on Saturday 4th August. In the mean time the under-14s must travel to Bredagh tomorrow (Thursday 26th) for a league game. Our under-14s’ postponed game at home to Downpatrick was played last Thursday

Our under-12s’ game away to Darragh Cross on Sunday was postponed. We host Liatroim on Sunday. Next weekend we should be busy again as we hope to take part in the Castlewellan tournament on Saturday 4th and then travel to St Paul’s on Sunday 5th.

Our under-10s fare well in the Pat Doyle Memorial blitz in Liatroim on Saturday winning through from a group containing Annaclone, Ballyholland and hosts Liatroim to reach the semi-final. This will stand the team in good stead when we travel to Drumaness for the next East Down blitz this Saturday – Darragh Cross and Dundrum will also be playing. Training for all our under-10s and under-8s resumes this evening (Wednesday 25th). Under-8s training is from 6.00 - 7.00 pm with the under-10s following from 7.00 – 8.00pm.

Application forms for the Cúl Camp (from 20th to 24th August) can be obtained from Kevin McGlynn (078 3596 0804) and can be returned to any of the juvenile mentors. Cheques should be payable to “Down County Board”.

Any juvenile mentors who haven’t yet returned their POC background check forms should do so asap. Those who have mislaid the form should contact Kevin McGlynn (078 3596 0804).

The Football Development Working Group meet again next Tuesday (31st) at 9.30pm. We hope to hold some sort of workshop or open evening soon and it is important that this is as well attended by members, especially players, as possible. Watch this space for further details.

Pep Keenan (4377 8712) now has rain-jackets, tracksuit tops and club rugby shirts in stock

Last Thursday’s lucky numbers were 1, 3, 9 and 17. There were two £10 winners and the jackpot stands at £1,750.

We extend our sympathy to the family and friends of Brigit McIlroy.
