St John’s Notes         4th July 2007

Our seniors’ win over Ballykinlar (1-14 v 0-06) on Friday brought them back level with Aghaderg in the league as Aghaderg had a bye. We are away to Dromara tomorrow (Thursday 5th), and will be competing in the Connolly Cup in Ballykinlar. The quarter finals are on consecutive evenings from Monday 9th to Thursday 12th; the semi-finals are on Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th with the final on Friday 20th at 8.00pm. We return to league action when we host St Michael’s towards the end of the month.

Our camogie team put their defeat to Portaferry behind them with convincing wins over Liatroim (2-11 v 1-03) and Darragh Cross (1-05 v 0-01). We are at home to An Riocht this evening in our penultimate league game. The next scheduled league game was to have been a trip to Portaferry at the end of the month but that has already been played. We have a bye in the opening round of the championship, scheduled for 1st August, so our next competitive game isn’t until 8th August when we travel to Newry Shamrocks to complete our league campaign. We then turn our attentions to the championship where we play the winners between Liatroim and Portaferry on Sunday 19th August.

Our Ladies Football fixture at home to Ardglass was postponed on Saturday.   They have three league games left, away to Rostrevor on 21st July and two fixtures to be rescheduled – away to Teconnaught and at home to Ardglass – before they turn their attentions to the championship.

Our minors enjoyed a four point home win over Castlewellan in the league last week. We are in championship action this evening (Wednesday 4th) when we travel to Banbridge.

Our under-16s overcame St Paul’s in the championship last week. We were away to Dromara yesterday (Tuesday). Next outing is scheduled for 24th July at home to Kilclief

Our under-14s had a wasted trip to Carryduff last Thursday as the referee failed to show. We play Downpatrick at home this FRIDAY in the last game before the July break. Our postponed away fixture with Kilcoo still has to be rescheduled as well. Hopefully the seniors will help the under-14s out and see them into the McCaisin Shield at Ballykinlar.

Our under-12s’ home game with Drumaness was postponed on Sunday. That would have been their last outing before the break. We are back in action on 22nd July when we are away to Darragh Cross

Our under-10s will be taking a break from training for three weeks from now. Training will resume on Wednesday 25th and it is important that there is a full turnout that day as the next East Down Blitz is the following Saturday (28th July). Under-8s training is from 6.00 - 7.00 pm with the under-10s following from 7.00 – 8.00pm. Subsequent blitzes are scheduled for on 4th and 18th of August.

We will be hosting a Cúl Camp from 20th to 24th August. Application forms can be returned to any of the juvenile mentors and cheques should be payable to “Down County Board”.

Our festival will be on over the weekend of 13th to 16th July. There really will be something for everyone with a Junior Disco on Thursday and Master Hypnotist Michael McCoy on Friday. There is a Speed Shearing event with a Stead BBQ on Saturday night and this event was an outstanding success last year. There will be a Guest Tea on Sunday evening featuring the popular county Harmony and there will be sheepdog trials on Monday.
