St John’s Notes         27th June 2007

Our seniors travelled to Aghaderg last Thursday and came out on the wrong side of a low scoring game. That means that Aghaderg leapfrog us into third position in the league table. We are at home to Ballykinlar this Friday and then away to Dromara on the following Thursday (5th July).

Our minors travelled to Kilcoo last Wednesday but were unable to repeat their opening day performance and lost out. We are at home to Castlewellan in the league this evening and next week it is back to the championship as we travel to Banbridge.

Our under-16s produced a strong second half performance to overcome St Paul’s in the league last week and will have been hoping to repeat the dose against the same opposition in the Championship yesterday. We are away to Dromara next Tuesday.

Our under-14s travelled to Castlewellan in the A championship last Thursday and advanced to the next round  on a 2-13 to 2-09 score-line after producing a good team performance That included a lot of high fielding by Joshua Wells. The same standard of teamwork was carried over to Saturday at the An Riocht tournament where the team won through the group stages and made it as far as the semi-final where then came unstuck against Burren. On the way we notched up wins over Newry Mitchels, Dromara, Castlewellan, Mayobridge and Saval.  We are back in league action tomorrow (Thursday 28th) when we are away to Carryduff A. We then play Downpatrick at home next week in the last game before the July break.

Our under-12s won away in Teconnaught on Sunday (2-12 v 4-09) in a game that brought the best from both teams. We are at home to Drumaness this Sunday. That is their last outing before the break.

Our under-10s travelled to Ardglass on Saturday for a Go Games Blitz where they came up against hosts Ardglass, Kilclief and Loughinisland. We field two sides and both the younger and older teams went through the day with 100% records. The improvement in their play was clearly evident especially with the under-8s who were playing in the younger team. Cushla Savage and Aidan Morgan were an outstanding pairing when both were in midfield but everyone performed well. The next under-10 blitz is on 28th July.

There were five £10 winners in the lottery last week. The numbers were 3, 5, 13 and 23. The jackpot now stands at £1,600.

Our festival will be on over the weekend of 13th to 16th July. There really will be something for everyone with a juvenile Disco on Thursday, a hypnotist, speed shearing, a guest tea, sheep dog trials (Lassie is innocent!) and loads of music.

We will be hosting a Cúl Camp from 20th to 24th August. Application forms can be returned to any of the juvenile mentors and cheques should be payable to “Down County Board”.
