St John’s Notes         11th July 2007

Our festival will be on over the weekend of 13th to 16th July with something for everyone and every taste over the period in the marquee. Our youngsters get the ball rolling with a Junior Disco on Thursday. Friday night promises to be a blast with Master Hypnotist Michael McCoy, a comedian and a disco til late. Saturday night sees a Speed Shearing event with a Steak BBQ. This was an n outstanding success last year and will appeal to the same wide audience this time around. To round the evening off there is music by Xperience. There is a Guest Tea on Sunday evening featuring the ever popular County Harmony. The festival will be rounded off by sheepdog trials on Monday with national and international champions in action.

Last week turned out to be a very quiet one on the playing field as our various teams had to endure a series of postponements. Most teams had to make do with an extra training session. Our seniors were the only team in action with a good win away in Dromara last Thursday (0-08 v 3-10).

Our seniors will be competing in the Connolly Cup in Ballykinlar this week. We will be the last team to go into action when we play Ardglass in the fourth quarter-finals tomorrow (Thursday)hoping to win through to a semi-final slot against either Dundrum or Ballykinlar in the second semi-final next Tuesday (17th). The final is next Friday (20th). All matches have 8.00pm throw-ins. We return to league action when we host St Michael’s towards the end of the month.

Our camogie team were due to play An Riocht at home last Wednesday but that will probably be this evening instead. This is our penultimate league game with the final game being away to Newry Shamrocks on Wednesday   8th August. We have been very at home in this division after our promotion last year winning every game bar one so far. We will soon be turning our attention to the championship. We have a bye in the opening round and will play either Liatroim or Mayobridge on Sunday 19th August.

Our Ladies Football team had a bye on Saturday past, following the previous week’s postponement so will need to put full commitment into training before their next scheduled league game away to Rostrevor. That would have been the last league game but there are fixtures with Ardglass (home) and Teconnaught (away) to be rescheduled.

Our minors were due to be in championship action last week but their trip to Banbridge was a victim of the weather.

Our under-16s’ game away to Dromara was another victim of the weather last Tuesday. Our next scheduled outing is the B Championship quarter-final away to St Joseph’s on Tuesday 24th.

Our under-14s were due to play Downpatrick at home on Friday last but that was postponed as well. Hopefully the seniors will help the under-14s out and see them into the McCaisin Shield at Ballykinlar. As well fixture at home to Downpatrick we also have an away fixture with Kilcoo to be rescheduled. Our next scheduled league game is away to Bredagh on Thursday 26th. We then play Bredagh again in the A Championship semi-final on Saturday 4th August.

Our under-12s’ home game with Drumaness was another postponement on Sunday. That would have been their last outing before the break. We are back in action on 22nd July when we are away to Darragh Cross.

Training for our under-10s will resume on Wednesday 25th. It is important that there is a full turnout that day as the next East Down Blitz is the following Saturday (28th July). We will also be sending a team to the Pat Doyle Memorial blitz on Saturday 21st. Under-8s training is from 6.00 - 7.00 pm with the under-10s following from 7.00 – 8.00pm. Subsequent blitzes are scheduled for on 4th and 18th of August.

We will be hosting a Cúl Camp from 20th to 24th August. Application forms can

be obtained from Kevin McGlynn (078 3596 0804) and can be returned to any of the juvenile mentors. Cheques should be payable to “Down County Board”.

Any juvenile mentors who haven’t yet returned their POC background check forms should do so asap. Those who have mislaid the form should contact Kevin McGlynn (078 3596 0804).

The lucky numbers in last week’s lottery were 5, 10, 13 and 28. There were 2 £10 winners and the jackpot now stands at £1,650.
