St John’s
Notes 6th June 2007
|
The passing of Dan Fitzpatrick cast a
dark shadow over
St John’s last week. He was a founding
member of our club as well as being our
inaugural chairman. He was deeply
committed to the GAA ideals and involved
in many aspects of community life. He
will be greatly missed. We extend our
sympathies to his family and friends at
this time. May he Rest in Peace.
We also extend our deepest sympathy to
our President Henry O’Hare on the death
of his brother Vincent. May he Rest in
Peace.
If Dan Fitzpatrick represented the
beginnings ad origins of our club then
no-one represents our future more than
our youngest players. Our under-8s
raised the banner for
St John’s again when they travelled to
the An Riocht blitz on Saturday and came
back with the Shield. They lost their
opening game as they adjusted to playing
11-a-side but won the next two before
going down to Mayobridge in the final
group game. (Mayobridge went on to win
the cup competition). By the knock-out
stages St John’s had found their feet
and their rhythm. When they faced
Rostrevor again in the final there was
only one team in it. Well done to all on
brining back the second piece of
silverware this year.
The seniors then collected the third
piece of silverware adding the County
Feis Sevens title to their East Down one
with a victory over Tullylish in
Castlewellan on Sunday.
Because of the bereavements last weeks
fixtures were thrown into disarray and
we would like to thank the potential
opponents, referees and East Down
officials for their patience and
understanding.
Our seniors home fixture against
Drumaness has been rescheduled for
Monday 11th. In the meantime
they have an away fixture against
Aughlisnafin on Friday (and a bye the
following Friday).
Our camogie fixture at home to
Mayobridge was played on Monday evening.
The team have a bye this evening
(Wednesday) and travel to Liatroim next
Wednesday.
Our Ladies Footballers lost at home to
Kilcoo on Saturday but will be hoping
for better things when they entertain
St Paul’s next Saturday evening.
Our minor league match at home to Burren
was scheduled for last Wednesday but
will now be played this evening.
Our under-16s were due to play in the
championship last week but that has now
been rescheduled for 12.00 this Sunday
(10th). In the meantime they
travelled to Saul yesterday and take on
Darragh Cross at home next Tuesday
Our under-14s should have entertained
Castlewellan last Thursday but that game
was rescheduled for Monday past (to be
fitted around the camogie fixture). We
travel to Bright in the first round of
the championship tomorrow and are away
to Kilcoo in the league next Thursday.
Our under-10s travel to An Riocht on
Saturday. The under-8s have set them a
target – I wonder if the under-10s can
match it? (Or the under-12s or under-14s
in subsequent weeks?).
The lottery numbers on 24th
May were 4, 15, 23 and 24 – there were 3
£10 winner
s. On 31st the lucky numbers
were 1, 4, 14 and 20 and there were two
£10 winners. The jackpot now stands at
£1,450.
We have received a new supply of shorts
from O’Neill (in all sizes) – contact
Pep Keenan (028 4377 8712). Pep also has
custody of a club jacket (unnamed) left
behind after the Feile and a hat in the
club colours found on Sunday.
Don’t forget our festival will be on
over the weekend of 13th to
16th July. We will be hosting
a Cúl Camp from 20th to 24th
August.
