St John’s
Notes 23rd May 2007
|
Our seniors had a fruitless trip to
Magheralin on Friday as the fixtures
were rearranged to accommodate the Down
v Cavan replay. They were unable to
apply the same pressure to the St
Michael’s defence as they had managed in
the home fixture and came away empty
handed. The team were away to
Ballykinlar on Monday and entertain
Dromara on Friday.
Our camogie team continued with their
excellent start in Division Three with a
win away in Kilcoo last week. They had a
good first half to lake a 0-2 to 1-3
lead and a better second half to come
out on top by 2-3 to 4-8. They will hope
to maintain this winning momentum when
they play Mayobridge next Wednesday (30th).
Although this was originally a home
fixture it will now be played in
Mayobridge. The camogs were also busy on
Sunday when they took part in the Feis
Sevens in Downpatrick. Camogie training
is at
6.30pm on Mondays and Wednesdays (when
there is no match)
Our ladies had a bye on Saturday past.
We are scheduled to entertain Rostrevor
this Saturday but this fixture may yet
be switched to next Monday. On Saturday
week (2nd June) we entertain
Kilcoo. There is also an outstanding
fixture away to Kilcoo to be
re-arranged.
Our minors haven’t played for a couple
off weeks now as our championship tie
away to Carryduff was postponed along
with the rest of the scheduled games. We
are scheduled to travel to Downpatrick
this evening before entertaining Burren
next week.
Our under-16s got the better of Bright
in the league last week and entertained
St Joseph’s
yesterday. There are no league fixtures
scheduled for next Tuesday so we may be
entertaining Bredagh in the first round
of the championship.
Our under-14s have been idle for a
couple of weeks as a bye in the league
was followed by a bye in the preliminary
round of the championship. We are due to
be back in action with a trip to
Bryansford in the league tomorrow but
that may also be rearranged.
The under-12s travelled to Liatroim on
Sunday. There is a free date this Sunday
before they entertain
St Paul’s on the first Sunday in June.
On Saturday the under-10s travelled to
Dromara for their second blitz of the
year. Disappointingly, Dromara and
St John’s were the only sides to show up
but they had a good game nonetheless.
Last Thursday’s lottery numbers were 10,
12, 13 and 22 – there were two £10
winners and the jackpot now stands at
£1,350.
The next committee meeting is on Monday
at
9.00pm.
Thanks to all who supported our
fundraising night and gave donations for
the South Down Youth Mission to
Zambia. The total amount raised was
£1,705.00.
Someone left a club jacket (unnamed)
behind after the Feile – it is in Pep
Keenan’s safe custody waiting for your
call (028 4377 8712).
Congratulations to local man Ciaran
McCullough who won the Sheep Shearing
contest at the Balmoral Show. He is now
through to the World Series. Last year’s
successful Speed Shearing event will be
repeated at our festival in July. As
anyone who was there will testify this
was a great evening’s crack last year –
so keep the weekend of 13th -
16th July free.
Looking slightly further ahead we will
be hosting a Cul Camp from 20th
to 24th August. We have had a
number of our older juveniles helping
with coaching over the last few years –
if anyone between 16 and 18 would like
to get a post as Assistant Coach with
the VHI Down Summer Camps they should
apply in writing to Sean Og McAteer in
the Down GAA office before 4th
June.
