St John’s
Notes 9th May 2007
At Friday’s Irish News Ulster Club awards in the Wellington
Park Hotel St John’s were “HIGHLY
COMMENDED FOR DEVELOPMENT OF UNDERAGE
PLAYERS”. Whilst the award was presented
received by Ulster Council Chairman Tom
Daly. This prestigious award is a credit
to the many who have contributed to our
work at underage level over the last
number of years and a recognition of
their efforts.
The roads around
St John’s suffered from Bank Holiday
congestion over the weekend as everyone
headed for the beach. Or at least for
the “Chicks with Sticks” beachwear Car
Wash on Sunday. This was a great success
and everyone now knows what colour their
car is. The girls would like to send a
big thanks you to Ben Willowby of
Milligan’s Tyres, Anthony Quinn of AQ
Engineering, Sean Savage, Aughlisnafin
Community Hall for the use of their
premises, Spar, JRs and Kevin Walsh for
plumbing services. And also to Dolly
Parton for making a greatly appreciated
guest appearance.
Our camogie team got the season off to a great start with a
home win over St Peters, Warrenpoint
last Wednesday (5-04 v 2-02). The win
was all the more pleasing as it was the
girls’ debut in Division Three. We are
away to Kilcoo tonight (Wednesday).
The seniors completed their first round of league matches
with a win over Aughlisnafin last
Friday. They have a bye this Friday
before entertaining Aghaderg in the
first of the second round of games. With
four wins out of six games there are
grounds for some satisfaction, and this
can serve as a platform to push on from.
With two wins already in the bag, our ladies have had to wait
for their third game as their home game
against St Michael’s was postponed from
Saturday to Monday. They are away to
Ardglass this Saturday.
Our minors fixture against Bryansford was supposed to be a
home fixture but had to be switched as
there was development work ongoing at
Pairc Naomh Eoin. The change, at short
notice, didn’t help the team but they
put in a good performance nonetheless
before going down by two points (2-09 v
1-10).
Our under-16s maintained their unbeaten run with an away win
over Kilclief. Their next two games are
both at home to Bright; in the
preliminary round of the championship
last night and in the league next
Tuesday.
The performance of the week was our under-14s second half at
home to Bredagh, when the team came back
from a twelve point deficit to record a
one point victory (4-11 v 4-10). On
Saturday they made it through to the
final of the Down Feile with a
semi-final win over Warrenpoint but they
found Clonduff too tough a nut to crack
in the final. Both A and B section
finals were played at St John’s this
year – the first time they have been
played at an East Down venue – and it is
another testament to our underage
development work that over 150 children
enjoyed a day playing football at our
club.
Some of the performers from the under-14 team turned out
again on Sunday for the Go Games contest
with Darragh Cross. The team produced
some great football on the day.
