St John’s
Notes 2nd May 2007
When the seniors take on Aughlisnafin at
home on Friday they will have completed
the first round of league matches (they
have a bye on Friday week, 11th).
They played well in the opening fixture
to overcome Aghaderg away by a single
point (1-13 to 2-11). The won again next
time out at home to Ballykinlar (0-14 v
0-06) although the standard of their
performance was not a good. High
standards were restored away to Dromara
(2-05 v 3-17) as the Johnnies went to
the top of the table. A slow start, at
home to St Michael’s saw the team slip
to a seven point deficit within the
opening ten minutes. The battled back
admirably but were not able to close the
gap but they did reduce the deficit to
two points at the close (1-10 v 1-12).
Last Friday we travelled to unbeaten
Drumaness and didn’t dent their record.
We started brightly but Drumaness were
back in control by the interval and won
comfortably in the end.
Our ladies football have got off to a
flying, albeit belated start. Their
opening fixture away to Kilcoo was
called off although both sides and the
referee turned up. On week two the girls
got a terrific away win at St Paul’s
(1-02 v 5-16) and on Saturday past they
kept up their 100% sequence with a home
win over previously unbeaten Teconnaught
(4-05 v 3-06). Mairead McCullough had a
storming game in this exciting game that
went all the way to the wire. We have
already amassed more points than we did
in all of last year (our inaugural year)
so the team will be in good spirits
ahead of the visit of St Michael’s next
Saturday (throw-in at 7.00pm).
Our camogie team are the only side not
to see competitive actions so far. That
will be put right when they entertain St
Peters Warrenpoint this evening at
7.00pm.
At underage level only the under-16s are
unbeaten after wins over St Paul’s away
(1-13 v 2-13) and Dromara at home (5-13
v 0-05). They will have hoped to
maintained that last night when they
travelled to Kilclief. They take on
Bright in the preliminary round of the
championship next Tuesday.
The minors have had mixed fortunes with
an excellent win over Kilcoo on the
opening day (4-04 v 1-07) but losing out
away to Castlewellan last week (3-08 v
2-06). They entertain Bryansford this
evening.
The under-14s started with a home win
over Carryduff A (3-11 v 2-08) before
losing out in Downpatrick (4-13 v 2-04)
last week. They entertain Bredagh
tomorrow evening.
The Go Games groups have been busy too,
with the under-12s playing Loughinisland
and Teconnaught. Their scheduled game at
Drumaness was postponed on Sunday but
hopefully with be rescheduled soon. Our
under-12s entertain Darragh Cross this
Sunday.
The under-10s hosted Downpatrick and
Dundrum in the first East Down blitz on
21st April, and all three
teams had goof footballers. It was
probably the hosts who played best as a
team though. The squad are busy at
training now, preparing for the next
blitz which is scheduled for 19th
May.
Last weeks lottery numbers were 10, 18,
22 and 26. There were two £10 winners
and the jackpot stands at £1,200.
The latest edition
of the club bulletin is now out. Annual
subscription is only £5.
Try to get your car/jeep/tractor as
mucky as possible this week for the
“Chicks with Sticks” will be doing a Car
Wash in the car park of the Aughlisnafin
Community Hall on Sunday (6th)
from
10am to 3.30pm. And isn’t this great
weather for the beachwear girls?
