St John’s
reach Under-14s Feile
Final 5th
May
The under-14 Feile finals were held at
St John’s on Saturday. St John’s are to
be credited for the new (ongoing) field
development for this allowed the A
section to be played out entirely on the
new field while the teams in the B
section competed on the top field. Both
fields were in great condition.
In the first semi-final in the B Section St John’s had the
better of the first half against
Warrenpoint but turned around with the
felling that the failure to put
dominance on the scoreboard might count
against them. Indeed
St John’s could have opened with a goal in the first minute when Ryan Gordon’s
pass set Philip Brennan through one on
one with the goalkeeper, but the keeper
was equal to Philip’s shot.
Chris McKay opened the scoring with a point before Philip had
another chance on goal. This time he was
set free by Martin Keenan’s pass and
this time he tried to get his shot away
first time, but again the keeper was
equal to it. Both sides traded wides
before Martin Keenan and then Darren
Burns added further points. Warrenpoint
tried hard for scores before the break
and could have had a goal but for a good
save from Chris Feenan with Kevin Keenan
sweeping up to clear the ball away to
safety. So it was the Warrenpoint had to
settle for a single point before the
break as they trailed three to one.
St John’s got off to a flying start in
the second period. They won the throw in
and moved the ball forward in a slick
flowing move that deserved a score.
However, the Warrenpoint defence seemed
to have neutralised the danger before
the ball fell to Ryan Gordon who fired a
low shot to the back of the net. A
couple of Warrenpoint points reduced the
margin before Chris McKay added another
point. Warrenpoint then had sufficient
chances to draw level but could only
fire a series of wides. St John’s had a
goal chance in the middle of this period
of Warrenpoint dominance. This time the
chance fell to the other corner forward,
Conor Gilmore, who beat the keeper only
to see a retreating defender hack his
goal-bound shot away to safety.
Then Ryan Gordon made a break through the middle and played
in Conor Gilmore. This time the corner
forwards combined as Conor passed to
Philip Brennan and this time the net
billowed. There was no way back for
Warrenpoint now and another Chris McKay
point saw the Johnnies safely through to
the final.
Saval’s supporters enjoyed the opening period of the second
semi more that the Clonduff followers.
They effectively got off to a three goal
boost – they netted first, but when
Clonduff were awarded a penalty it went
narrowly wide of the left hand upright.
Saval netted again to cement their lead
but towards the close Clonduff began to
send out signals of their serious
intentions. They got a goal and a point,
and almost had a second goal but their
shot defied geometry as it cannoned off
both posts and away to safety. Clonduff
took up where they had left off after
the break and a couple of points brought
the teams level again. Saval nosed a
head again but Clonduff’s attack was
irresistible and they came away as
deserving winners.
Clonduff continued in that groove in the final and
St John’s soon found themselves a goal
and a point adrift. A score would have
settled the Johnnies but they were
denied that when Joshua Wells’ free came
back of the upright. Clonduff doubled
their tally before the break. The second
period was closer as the teams traded
scores, but the day belonged to Clonduff.
