St John’s Notes 29th August 2007
Sunday was a good day for the red and amber
with both our senior football and camogie
teams advancing in their respective championships.
Our seniors overcame Bright by 1-08 to 0-06.
We made hard work of it as we were often unable
to convert possession and territorial advantage
into scores. We restricted Bright to two points
in the first half but only totalled 1-3 ourselves.
Again in the second period we had plenty of
chances to put the game beyond the Division
Three team but instead we kept it “interesting”
as they narrowed the margin to three and had
a couple of goal chances before we stretched
away to win with four of the last five scores.
Many in the crowd then returned to Pairc
Naomh Eoin to support our camogie team in
their semi-final against Liatroim despite
the competing attraction of Kerry v Dublin
on the telly. The team rewarded them for their
support as they were never behind against
their neighbours before running out 4-06 to
1-04 winners. The girls had put themselves
in a very comfortable position at the interval
with a 2-5 to 1-0 advantage. The performance
levels may have dropped a bit in the second
period but they were still able to outscore
the opposition and secure a place in next
Sunday’s final. Ann Cunningham was as
safe as houses at the back for the Johnnies.
This is their second championship final in
a row with either An Riocht or Newry Shamrocks
to provide the opposition.
Our reserves have also progressed in the
championship having overcome Down Seniors
last Sunday and take on Burren on Saturday.
In the meantime we play Castlewellan away
tomorrow (Thurs 30th) in a rearranged league
fixture.
Our minors travel to Downpatrick this evening
(Wednesday 29th). The same side played out
an entertaining draw at St John’s two
weeks ago so this promises to be a good game
as well. We must also travel to Burren and
entertain Bryansford before the league season
is complete.
Our under-14s travelled to Castlewellan last
Thursday bur lost 2-10 to 1-10 despite playing
the better football. We entertained Bryansford
on Monday and are at home again to Kilcoo
on Thursday. To round off a busy week we travel
to Carryduff on Sunday.
Our under-10s are still working hard ahead
of their next Go Games Blitz on September
8th. This will be hosted by St John’s.
The Cúl Camp was very successful again
last week, and blessed by an improvement in
the weather. It was good to see hurling getting
as boost. It was good to see the special needs
group working away at their skills too, and
enjoying their games like everyone else.
Last weeks lucky numbers were 10, 18, 25
and 26. There were four £10 winners
and the jackpot is now £2,050.
The next management committee is on Monday
3rd September at 9.00pm.
