St John’s Notes 28th Sept 2008
Sunday 28th September 2008 will be remembered
as a famous day for St John’s GAC as
it was the day when our senior team won our
first football championship. Victories over
Dromara, Drumaness and St Paul’s had
secured a place in the final against Bright.
The final was a tense low scoring game but
the Johnnies lived up to their favourite’s
tag to come out as deserving winners by 0-09
to 0-05 to ensure their place in club history.
Friday 26th will go down as an infamous day
as our clubhouse was destroyed in a senseless
arson attack. A lot of media speculation linked
this attack to an earlier graffiti attack
on our neighbours at Ballywillwill Orange
Hall. The only real connection is that both
attacks were despicable. The people who attacked
our neighbours are no friends of St John’s,
and those who attacked our club do not represent
anyone in our local community.
In the wake of the attack we have been boosted
by many goodwill messages and offers of support,
both from within the GAA community and beyond.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all our
good neighbours for their help and encouragement
at this time.
Our under-12s were beaten by Saul in championship
semi-final on Saturday. St John’s played
well throughout and were pressing hard for
an equalising score towards the finish but
Saul were able to get forward on a break and
got a goal to end our hopes. In their previous
outing, in the league, we got a draw away
to Carryduff. We looked to be heading for
a deserved win but a goal with practically
the last kick of the game meant that the spoils
were shared. We still have a league game against
St Paul’s top play, and our under-10s
and under-8s may also get an outing against
An Riocht.
