Warrenpoint lose
two in a Row
ACFL Div
1: Longstone 0-12 Warrenpoint 0-11
Taken
from Warrenpoint Website
Longstone
collected 2 valuable home points in
a very tight game which could have went
either way against a Warrenpoint side
who will be annoyed with some of their
poor passing and, in the second half
especially, some poor tackling, giving
frees away at vital times.
In a keenly contested game, in which
the sides were level on 9 occasions,
it was the Stone who opened the scoring
inside the first minute after Warrenpoint
lost possession in their own half, only
for Stephen Doran to capitalise. This
lead was quickly quashed when Stevie
Rodgers slotted over a free a minute
later and on eight minutes the same
player put the blues in front with a
great point from the left side of the
field. Ronan McMahon increased the Point's
lead with a pointed free, only Longstone
hit back with 2 points in the same number
of minutes, Eamon Trimble and a fabulous
long range point from Norman McComb.
Warrenpoint's Franco Trainor was causing
havoc in the home sides full back line
and scored a wonderful point on 16 minutes.
Again, Longstone hit back to level the
scores at 0-4 each with a Barry Doran
free after 20 minutes. Ronan McMahon
put the blues ahead 1 minute later only
to have Longstone rally and take the
lead with two super points from Conor
Smyth and Adrian Trainor, after some
awful Warrenpoint play, which saw them
lose possession in good position. Stephen
Rodgers converted his second free after
a foul on the fast moving Franco Trainor
on the half to level scores again. Longstone
raised their game again and in injury
time, Barry Doran converted his second
free to give Longstone a 1 point lead
at the interval, 0-7 to 0-6.
The second half started in a blistering
pace when again, Franco Trainor won
a ball on the end line, beat the full
back and ran into fist a point to put
the sides level. The parity only lasted
2 minutes when Barry Doran pointed two
frees in as many minutes, after some
sloppy distribution and tackling from
Warrenpoint. Within 8 minutes Stevie
Rodgers put the sides level for the
seventh time with two free kicks, as
a result of the great running of full
forward Franco Trainor. The Point edged
their noses in front midway though the
2nd half with a Ronan Mcmahon effort.
From here, the Point seemed to lack
that killer instinct and failed to build
on their lead. Instead, they found themselves
losing possession in vital areas of
the field and Barry Doran scored his
5th free of the game to level matters,
which was quickly followed up with an
excellent score from Conor Smyth, his
second of the game. The game seemed
to be slipping away from the point when
in the 26th minute, substitute, Larry
Byrne pooped up to score an equalising
point, 0-11 each. One minute later,
the Blues out did their great work and
gave possession away again which resulted
in a Longstone free, which was slotted
over for the winning score by who else,
but Barry Doran.
At the end, Longstone will say they
deserved the win, and the point will
be disappointed to lose yet another
game they could have won. For the winners
John Trainor, Aidan Trainor and Barry
Doran had great hours. For the Blues,
Franco Trainor, Stevie Rodgers and Shane
McClory played well.
