Hurling Friendly: First half Killeavy goals too much for battling  ‘Point

A second defeat in a row for Liam Boyle’s Warrenpoint, who have failed to show some of their mid-season form that proved so devastating against Portaferry and Ballygalget.

With less than a minute gone Killeavy were in front after a long range free.  But the blues hit back with a well-worked score from county minor John O’Kane, which was followed up by a Paul Brown free.  Warrenpoint played some good open hurling but were not making the possession count on the scoreboard.  Killeavy were on the ‘back foot’ until they equalised from another set piece.  John O’Kane scored again after being set up by Conor Reilly to edge the ‘Point out in front once again by a single score.

On the quarter hour mark Killeavy created a number of good goal chances the first being saved by Brian Murphy, but a poor defence clearance by Eugene Mc Conville allowed Killeavy to draw level once again.  A Conan O’Neill point from a well-worked Warrenpoint attack is cancelled out by a Killeavy goal, after some ghastly goalkeeping.   Bizarre incident in the 20th minute Killeavy hit the bar from 60m out and the goalkeeper struggles to clear the ball. Almost a minute later Killeavy hit the bar again this time from 45m, yet again some dismal goalkeeping led to the ball being powered to the net.  The blues recovered some dignity with a well-worked training ground score from John O’Kane.

  Half-time Warrenpoint 0-4 Killeavy 2-3

A very physical start to the second half with Kevin Rice being brought on who goaled for Warrenpoint after a Conor Reilly point and Killeavy free.  Two minutes later Tommy Mulligan is on hand to score the Point’s second goal.  The blues had now taken the lead and increased it from a James O’Hare free and all this happened inside the first 10 minutes!  Sadly the game died after this and the pace dropped.  Another dry sunny night with little or no wind at Moygannon did not provide the much anticipated fast hurling.

Both sides exchanged frees but a Liam Rice score levelled the match with seconds left.  Victory was then snatched away from the ‘point as a Killeavy 65 was sent over leaving the final score:

Warrenpoint 2-9 Killeavy 2-10
