(Report taken From Down Democrat)

Newry Bosco have added the league crown to the County Minor Championship crown when they defeated Kilcoo with an impressive 30 minute display of football. The introduction of Connor Loughran proved to be the deciding factor between Bosco winning and losing this game. Loughran came on in the second half and scored a goal and five points.

Kilcoo were the dominant force in the first half. Brian McLaughlin and Ruari Devlin caused problems up front and the back line showed alertness, denying the Bosco forward line a sniff of the ball in the opening ten minutes. Kilcoo will feel aggrieved they let a half time five point lead slip but Bosco restarted a different side. Kilcoo started the brighter team. Martin McClean imposed himself in midfield for the Kilcoo side.

From the throw in he set up the first attack passing the ball out to Alphonsis McEvoy who drove it from just outside the box only to hit the crossbar. Kilcoo couldn’t have asked for a better start. Ruari Devlin sent floated a free kick into the goal mouth a scramble ensued but McLaughlin was first to react and kicked to ball from the ground into the net for a goal in the third minute. Alphonsis McEvoy added a point after a good interchange between himself and McLaughlin.

Francie Downey pointed after picking up the loose ball from outside the box on 11 minutes. Bosco won a free within kicking distance from the posts and Downey sent the ball between the sticks. A minute later Ruari Mulvanny sent a high ball into Martin Duggan who was forced out towards the left corner but still managed to send the ball over the bar. Bosco brought themselves back into the game although they made hard work of getting the ball forward.

The Newry side relied heavily on Mullen and Downey bringing the ball forward but the pressure from Chris Ward and Roger Morgan for Kilcoo made it impossible to get a shot. Kilcoo were excellent at closing down the attacking options of Bosco and a few counter attacks ran the same line of names which included Ward, O’ Hare the two midfielders, Devlin and McLaughlin.

Conor Lavery came got more involved in the game for the north Down club. Lavery made a solo run heading straight down the centre of the pitch towards the Bosco goal.He shrugged off four tackles before being eventually dragged down for a penalty. Alphonsis took the responsibility of converting the ball to the back of the net.

Two free kicks from McLaughlin went over the bar and a pointed free from Francie Downey finished the first half action. Bosco replaced Garth Chambers with Connor Loughran. Francie Downey pointed for the home side, and McClean replied with a point after a catching an awkward ball. Bosco sprung to life and showed more urgency in getting the ball forward.

Long balls were now deployed and they knocked over three unanswered points in quick succession. Kilcool halted the rampage with an Alphonsis adding another point to his tally from a free. Bosco were firing in all cylinders and controlled all sectors of the field.

Craven played the ball across the field left to right to captain Mulvanny. He spotted the running Loughran and kicked the ball across goal were Loughran directed into the net on 60 minutes. Kilcoo pointed a free to narrow the margin but they started to show signs of a spent force.

Again the Bosco super sub had his sights on goal but opted for a point. The away side lifted their heads again, McClean won the ball in midfield and sent the ball forward where Lavery collected he fisted the ball to Alphonsis McEvoy who buried the ball to the back of the net giving them a lifeline on the stroke of full time. Bosco added two injury time points to seal their victory and win the league.
