Down County Minor Football Final
Newry
Bosco 3 - 6 v Longstone 2 - 07 - 15/09/2002
Newry Bosco collected their first ever Down MFC title in
an entertaining final in Pairc Esler, Newry on Sunday 15th
September defeating Mourne side Longstone on a scoreline
of 3-6 to 2-7.
While the scoreline gives the impression of a close, hard-fought
encounter it wasn't the case. Two late goals for Longstone
in the final four minutes of the tie gave the scoreboard
a better look.
The Newry side dominated the game from the start with Neil Conlon and Neil Mullen on top in the midfield sector. Mark Rooney and Neil Rooney were in outstanding form in defence, while in a lively attack Francie Downey, Danny Craven and Ryan Lynch always looked dangerous when in possession.
They were good value for their 1-2 to 0-1 lead at the interval. The expected comeback by Longstone in the opening minutes of the second-half didn't materialise as the Newry Bosco side increased their lead in the opening minutes of the half with another goal from Danny Craven to lead his side leading by 2-4 to 0-1.
As the half progressed Longstone came more into the game and were rewarded with points from frees by Mark Poland. When Eamon Trimble goaled for them with four minutes of the game remaining to leave just two points between the sides it looked as if the Newry side were in a spot of bother.
However, the winners didn't loose their cool in this situation and they raced upfield for Danny Craven to score a vital goal that put them back in the driving seat. Longstone battled right to the end and were rewarded with a second goal on the call of time from Ambrose Rodgers - a score that came too late to change the result.
Overall, a good competitive final between two well-disciplined sides, with the Newry forwards ability to get scores at vital times the difference in the end.
