Kilmacud All - Ireland Invitation Senior Sevens - 23/09/2002

Bellaghy captured their second All-Ireland Sevens title when they defeated Kilmainhamwood in the final at Kilmacud Crokes on Saturday the 21st September. The Co Derry side added the All-Ireland Sevens football crown to their Castlewellan Sevens title they won a few weeks ago.

The event was dominated by Ulster sides, with seven teams from the province qualifying for the quarter-finals. The holders Tuam Stars didn't even make it through to the latter stages. Bellaghy easily accounted for Co Down side Clonduff in the semi-final but the other penultimate round tie went right to the wire. With seconds to go, Bryansford of Down led Meath's Kilmainhamwood by two points. But, from a hop ball, Kilmainhamwood won possession, with Francis Owens scoring the goal that gave them a dramatic 3-5 to 0-13 win.

In the final, however, K'wood proved no match for a rampant Bellaghy. The Derry outfit were sent on their way by an early goal from Joe Cassidy. By half-time, they led by 4-8 to 1-2, with Gavin Diamond notching five points from play. To their credit, Kilmainhamwood scored three goals in quick succession after the restart but Bellaghy held firm for a 6-11 to 4-4 victory.
