All - Ireland Invitation Senior Mens Sevens - 07/09/2002


Bellaghy (Co Derry) troted home easy winners of the Down Democrat sponsored Castlewellan Sevens. Derry side Bellaghy who beat Down side Kilcoo in the final played in St Malachy's Park on Saturday 7th September.

In the quarter final stages Castlewellan met Skryne from Meath winning 5-10 to 2-5. Glen from Derry with Fergal McCusker and Enda Gormley on board were the next to advance when they beat Sarsfields Armagh on a scoreline of 0-13 to 1-7. Bellaghy had too much power overcomming Cooley Kickhams louth 4-6 to 1-8 and in the last quarter final Kilcoo overcame St Malachy's 1-12 to 1-7.

The semi finals were evenly contested with Bellaghy squeezing out Castlewellan by 3 points 2-10 to 4-7 and Kilcoo of Down eliminating Glen 3-7 to 1-7.

Bellaghy claimed the title after a titanic struggle with Kilcoo on a scoreline of 5-11 to 3-7 to win the competition for the second time. Gareth Doherty of Bellaghy was named Player of the Tournament picking up the Belfast Crystal Award.

Competition Hosts: Since 1980 St Malachy's Club have hosted what is recognised as the second biggest 7-a-side competition in Ireland. The event is held annually in September always on the Saturday before the All-Ireland hurling final in the host Club's hometown of Castlewellan. Castlewellan have won the prestigious Kilmacud Croke's Beamish ALL-Ireland Sevens 4 times, the last being in 2000. Kilmacud Crokes are the current holders of the Castlewellan Sevens having won it in 2001 ( they last won the Castlewellan competition in 1983).
