League race hotting up - 02/08/2002

Leaders Rostrevor dropped a point when they were held to a draw at home by a young and talented Kilcoo side who came from two points behind in the final minutes to force a draw with a pointed free from Martin Johnston.

Holders Mayobridge closed the gap on the leaders with an impressive 13 points win over a struggling An Riocht side, who now share bottom place with Warrenpoint. County senior stars Michael Walsh and Benny Coulter scored four points each in this tie, while Robbie Coulter was on the mark with 1-4.

The 'Bridge have two games on hand over the leaders and look in a very favourable position. Castlewellan moved into third spot after their thrilling victory over their great rivals, Bryansford. Goals by Niall McAleenan and Brian Dougherty in the final minutes of this game gave Castlewellan a late but deserved 2-11 to 1-10 win.

Despite this defeat, Bryansford remain in joint fourth spot with Burren who have hit a winning run in recent times with their latest success being at Downpatrick where they had seven points to spare. Downpatrick, as a result of this defeat, drop down the league table just above the relegation area.

The best win of the weekend was that of Liatroim at Clonduff, where they won in excellent fashion by 17 points to push the Hilltown side into the bottom four relegation area. Loughinisland are now level on points with Clonduff after their win over bottom club Warrenpoint.

With two-thirds of the league competition completed, there is still much to play for by all clubs, and there is sure to be an exciting finale to the competition.
