Ballinderry edge out Mayobridge - 27/10/02

Ballinderry 0-9 v 0-7 Mayobridge

Ballinderry showed their All-Ireland credentials by producing a battling display to repel a brave Mayobridge challenge in Sunday's Ulster Club Football tie at Newry.

Mayobridge appeared to have done the hard work when restricting the Derry side to a one-point lead at the interval with a strong wind advantage to follow in the second period. But Ballinderry, boosted by superb displays from Enda Muldoon and wing-back Darren Crozier, produced a great second half to claim a deserved victory.

It was something of a rough-house game which saw 13 bookings and the late dismissal of Mayobridge defender Francis Polland.

Two excellent saves from 'Bridge goalkeeper Sean Fetherstone restricted Ballinderry's interval lead to the minimum. Mayobridge looked to have the edge midway through the second period when they levelled the contest for the sixth time thanks to a Mickey Linden point.

However, Ballinderry then used possession football to good effect to take a measure of control and two unanswered points from Declan Bateson and Gerard Cassidy proved crucial.

Darren Conway's injury-time point made the game safe for Ballinderry.

Ballinderry advance to a semi-final meeting with either Crossmaglen or Errigal Ciaran whose game was postponed yesterday.
