Bridge put title on line as Championship hits Down - 13/08/2003

The Down SF club championship starts this weekend with some potential great games on the cards. Last years championship Mayobridge take on second division Saval at Newry on Sunday evening at 7.15 pm. Mayobridge who top division one will fancy their changes of retaining the title and welcome back Daragh Tighe and Brendan Rodgers to strengthen their defence. Saval however can call on players such as Colm and Peter Turley and Danny Hughes who on their day will cause problems for any defence. The other game in Newry on Sunday evening is Longstone v Annaclone which takes place at 5.45 pm. The stone who have had some great victories in division one this year should win this game with a few points to spare.

Bryansford who according to the bookies is 3rd favorite for the title take on old rivals Downpatrick on Saturday at Castlewellan in the first game of a double bill (5.45). The Ford should win this game with a comfortable margin. The second game to take place in Castlewellan is between two of the teams which prop up division one - Rostrevor and Loughinisland (7.15). Both teams welcome back quality County players and both will fancy their changes of qualifying for the next round.

An Riocht who over the last few games have been in fine form defeating Longstone and Liatroim take on Castlewellan on Monday night at Newcastle (7.15pm). Castlewellan have experienced a deep in form over the last few weeks, but with players such as Greg McCartan, Mickey McVeigh back in action after county duty Castlewellan may be to strong for the Kilkeel side. For the Kingdom to have any change they will need fine performances from players such as John Clarke and John Lavery.

Other games over this weekend include - Liatroim v Warrenpoint Tuesday night in Mayobridge (7.15pm), Shamrocks take on Clonduff on Thursday night in Burren (7.15pm) while Kilcoo take on Burren on Friday night at 7.15pm in Clonduff.
