Bryansford won this East Down final which
took place at Ballykinlar on Sunday past with a late goal
in extra time. Not only did they win the game in extra time
with a late goal, but they also scored a late goal in normal
time to level the match. Bryansford looked down and out
until Conor Gribben's goal brought the sides level with
only seconds of normal time remaining. Daryl Valentine scored
the winning goal in the final minute.
Bryansford opened the scoring within the first minute with
a pointed free from Chris Brannigan, they followed this
with a Ruairi Donnelly goal a minute later. However the
ford failed to score for the next 20 minutes in which stage
Kilcoo had taken control of the game and although they missed
some good chances they levelled with three pointed frees
by Donal Kane and another from Conor Laverty midway through
the half.
Bryansford's Phelim McGreevy tipped the ball over the bar
to put his side back in the lead. Two minutes from half
time Donal Kane levelled from a free to leave an interval
scoreline of Bryansford 1-2 Kilcoo 0-5.
The game picked up pace in the second half and again Bryansford
started the brighter scoring two points from Chris Brannigan
and one from Conor Gribben inside the opening five minutes.
As in the first half Kilcoo took control of the game and
points from Conor Laverty, Michael Kane and Donal Kane brought
the sides level once more
Kilcoo took the lead through a Gerard McEvoy long range
point midway through the half. On the 18th minutes Kilcoo
were awarded a penalty when Donal Kane was fouled. Bryansford
keeper Sean James Brannigan pulled off a great save to keep
out Conor Laverty's spot kick.
Kilcoo were not to be denied and with five minutes left
they produced their best move of the game. In passing movement
up the whole field involving six men they cut through the
Bryansford defence for Michael Kane to shoot to the net.
With a minute left on the clock Chris Brannigan pointed
a Bryansford free to narrow the gap to four points. Their
was eight minutes of unjury time played in which the game
was played at even faster pace. Chris Brannigan and Conor
Laverty exchanged frees before Niall Neeson narrowed the
gap to a goal. With the last kick of normal time, Conor
Gribben scored a dramatic levelling goal to send the game
into extra time.
The first half of extra time saw no scores with both sides
missing chances. All the excitement was in the second period.
Conor Laverty and Fergal Maguire exchanged points before
Dominic McEvoy put Kilcoo ahead again. Bryansford scored
a late goal to regain the lead. Right from the kick-out
Kilcoo responded and were awarded a free. The whole Bryansford
team lined up across the goal. Conor Laverty elected to
point the free to leave the fianl score 3-09 for Bryansford
to Kilcoo's 1-14
