Newry Set for £250 Million Sports Development
- 16/10/2002
Details have been revealed by Busness men
in Newry that they want to develop £250 million state
of the art entertainment, leisure and conference centre
incorporating a 35,000 seater covered sports arena, a 50m
swimming pool, a conference centre and retail/business park
in Newry City.
The proposal is that the stadium would
provide an environment for GAA, soccer, rugby, hockey, swimming
and other sports.
The blueprint was brought for discussion
at a management committee meeting of the Down County Board
last Tuesday, the officials at the meeting decided “kick
it into touch”.
The businessmen want to build the new stadium
on the site of Pairc Esler - The County Ground of Down GAA,
and make Down GAA its anchor tenants. It is the idea of
the GAA having to sell their ground, then rent it back and
of "other Sports" being played on its grounds
which has forced the County Officials to "kick it into
touch". Rule 42 of the GAA prevents ‘foreign games’
from being played on its grounds.
The group of local businessmen who developed
the strategy claim to have secured a partner “willing to
provide £100m and an investor who is willing to provide
a further £40m towards the commercial elements of the scheme.
