Down Man on McCague's review committee - 03/11/02

GAA President Sean McCague has set up a sub-committee to review a number of the association's rules in an effort to prevent further controversies such as the ones that blighted the games this year.

A number of cases this year highlighted the lack of consistency with implementing certain rules. Incidents such as the Munster football final in which Cork used one sub too many against Tipperary and the An Ghaeltacht affair in Kerry have all brought heavy criticism upon the GAA.

Even now Dublin club Na Fianna are in the middle of appealing their suspension from the county championship after they were found to have used an extra sub. McCague is hoping that the sub-committee can prevent such cases arising in the future.

The panel will also review Rule 41, which deals with playing in America and then report to the GAA's Ard Comhairle early in 2003, so that any proposals for rule changes can be put before Congress.

The members of the sub-committee are Padraic Duffy, chairman of the GAC / Frank Burke, chairman of the Galway County Board / Dan McCartan, chairman of the National Referees' Committee (Down) / Frank Murphy, secretary of the Cork County Board / James Nallen, Mayo senior footballer.
