Poor Down representation on Ulster Railway Cup sides - 05/11/02

For the first time in over forty years, Down did not have one player in the starting fifteen which played Munster in the Railway Cup semi-final in Galway last weekend and Leinster in the final played at the re-developed Pearse Stadium, Salthill on Sunday.

Michael Walsh and Liam Doyle did come on as substitutes in both games. With Walsh scoring a point in the final. This just shows the current low ebb of Down football at the present time, and also gives an indication of the task in hand for Paddy O'Rourke and his management team in trying to resurrect Mourne county football in the coming season.

For the record Ulster lost the Railway Cup football final to Leinster by two points in a closely contested game.

Gary Savage was Down's only representative on the Ulster hurling team which was heavily defea-ted by Munster in the Railway Cup semi-final played in Kilkenny also last weekend.
