Irish Rules squad arrive in Australia 18/10/03

The International Rules series produces uncompromising action Ireland's International Rules squad have arrived in Perth ahead of Friday's opening Test.

The journey from Ireland took over 24 hours so the Irish will spend the opening full day in Australia resting before starting training in earnest on Tuesday.

Friday's opening encounter at the Subiaco Oval which staged Saturday's Rugby World Cup game between England and South Africa is a 45,000 sell-out.

John O'Keefe's squad will be hoping that they can maintain the superb record of away teams in the 19-year history of the series. In all but one of the nine series, the visitors have claimed victory with the Irish class of 1998 the only squad to have upset that statistic.

Friday's game will be the first International Rules contest staged in Perth since the 1990 encounter. Last year's winning captain Shane Crawford will once again skipper the Australians.

The second and final Test takes place at the MCG in Melbourne on 31 October.
