McCartan charged with Assault - 14/12/03

Double All-Ireland winner James McCartan is to stand trial early next year in connection with an alleged assault on a Westmeath senior player. The alleged incident is alleged to have occurred during a challenge game last May.

During the course of the game Westmeath full-back Kenny Larkin was taken off with a fractured jaw.

The former Down star and present manager of Queen's Universities Sigerson team has been charged under the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997, that he carried out an assault causing harm to Kenneth Larkin.

The proceedings will take place in Dublin's Richmond Hospital complex on March 3rd next in what is sure to be a high-profile case. If found guilty, he faces the prospect of imprisonment for a term of up to 12 months or a fine of up to 1,500 euros, or both.

McCartan's Queen's University side were drawn last week to meet Athlone IT in the first round of the 2004 Sigerson Cup. McCartan has confirmed that he will be traveling to Athlone to manage the Queen's side in January against the Westmeath College.
