THE GAC are aiming to wrap up
the long-running Kenny Larkin broken jaw probe
at a meeting in Croke Park tonight.
Westmeath defender Larkin was
left with a broken jaw after an incident in a
challenge match against Down in Newcastle, Co
Dublin on May 27 last.
The off-the-ball incident left
him taking food and drink through a straw for
five weeks, suffering extreme gum pain, out of
work as a garda trainee for weeks and requiring
the insertion of two plates around his chin and
a third below his ear.
The GAC have already established
that Down forward James McCartan may have a case
to answer and he has been invited to have a personal
hearing tonight. It is not known if McCartan will
attend the meeting.
He already faces court proceedings
early next month over the alleged incident after
a complaint and subsequent investigation by Rathcoole
gardaí.
The GAC were recently instructed
by the GAA's powerful Management Committee to
expedite proceedings and come to a conclusion
before the matter made the courts. The games administration
body had to shelve scheduled meetings in December
and January for various reasons but are now determined
to finish with their dealings on a case that rose
to prominence last autumn when it emerged that
gardaí were waiting outside a meeting room
in Croke Park to interview McCartan who had been
asked to attend as part of the initial GAC investigation.
The GAA were angered about the
presence of the gardaí for what was a private
meeting and made their feelings known to Garda
authorities subsequently.
