Former All Ireland winner McCartan appointed Queen's Sigerson Manager
- 06/09/2002
James McCartan, All Ireland winner of 1991 and 94 has been
appointed the new manager of Queen's University Belfast.
Two times All Star, McCartan has moved up from the Queen's
freshers management post to become the new Sigerson Manager
at the University.
"Wee James" replaces former Armagh footballer Aidan Short,
who after two years in the post stepped down. McCartan who
lead the successful Queen's freshers team last year also
takes his backroom team with him of fellow Burren club man
Donal Murdock and former Armagh forward Denis Holywood.
Denis and Donal managed the Queen's Freshers team to All
Ireland glory in 1995 both winning Sigerson medals along
with James in 1993. James also won a Sigerson cup medal
in 1990 along with a freshers title, as well as captaining
Queens to Ryan Cup success in 1992. McCartan's Sigerson
history is a rather chequered one, being sent off in two
finals in 1992 (v UCG) and in 1993 (v St Mary's).
McCartan will be hopeing to build on last years successful
freshers team and he will be able to call on players such
as Armagh's Ronan Clarke, Paddy McKeever, Kevin McElvanna,
Down's John Clarke (An Riocht), Patrick Pearse McCartan
(Liatroim) and Aidan Cole (Rostrevor), as well as Martin
McGrath from Fermanagh, Sean Kelly from Antrim, Conal Dunne
from Donegal, and new addition Billy Joe Padden from Mayo.
