Last year's NFL beaten finalists Cavan
took another giant step to getting into this year's semi-finals
after securing a gritty win over hosts Down at Castlewellan.
Playing with the aid of the wind in the first half, Down
were knocked back on their heels inside the opening eight
minutes when a point by Paul Galligan was swiftly followed
by a well-taken goal by Lavey clubman Sean Maguire.
It was the 12th minute before Down opened
thier scoring when Gregory McCartan pointed. The Mournemen
then took control of the game and despite missing many good
chances (11 in total during the first half), Down scored
eight unanswered points through Sean Ward, Liam Doyle (2),
Martin Cole, Benny Coulter, Shane Ward and Aidan O'Prey
to lead by 0-9 to 1-1. Cavan rallied with two Dermot McCabe
points and one from Finbar O'Reilly to leave Down ahead
at half-time by 0-9 to 1-4.
Within three minutes of the restart Cavan
were level with points from Paul Brady and Finbar O'Reilly
and well on the road to victory.
Still, the Mourne County found themselves
very much in contention for the spoils when, in the 41st
minute, Gregory McCartan converted a penalty after Colin
McCrickard was fouled in the Cavan square.
The exchanges became intense as each side
in turn fought for supremacy. Cavan fought back to level
the game with two Paul Galligan points and one from Finbar
O'Reilly. With ten minutes left Anthony Forde pointed a
Cavan free to regain the lead. Down fought back for Michael
Walsh to level with a point from a free and then in quick
succession he missed three easy chances. Cavan regrouped.
Dermot McCabe pointed twice and Paul Galligan added a point
as the visitors held out for victory.
