name unchanged side to face Fermanagh - 17/06/03 2003
Ulster Football Championship - Semi Fianl
Down
v Fermanagh
@ 4.30 p.m. Clones, Sunday 22nd June 2003
Down
manager Paddy O'Rourke has kept faith with the team which defeated Monaghan for
Sunday's Ulster football championship semi-final against Fermanagh at Clones this
Sunday. The only doubt is whether full-forward Dan Gordon will have recovered
from the ankle injury that forced him to retire from the quarterfinal win over
Monaghan in Casement Park. The big target-man would be a huge loss to the side,
especially as he has been in excellent form in recent games. If Gordon is missing
it is likely that James McCartan would make the starting line up. Gordon
is the only real injury doubt for the Mourne side, who defeated Monaghan last
time out and looking forward to the semifinal clash on Sunday in Clones. Already
there is great interest in this new-look Down side, and if they should progress
to the Ulster senior final, there are many people not alone in the home county,
but throughout the province that would quietly fancy them to upset the Tyrone
applecart. O'Rourke and his players are looking no further
than Sunday's clash and aim to do a league and championship 'double' over Dominic
Corrigan's Fermanagh side. It wont be the first time that the managers have crossed
swords either. Corrigan and O'Rourke clashed when Down and Fermanagh met in the
1984 Ulster Championship and both managers joined forces to manage and coach Castleblayney
a few years back. Dominic Corrigan is a cute manager and he has a particular insight
into the abilities of a large number of the current Down squad through his work
at colleges' level with St. Michael's Enniskillen. It has
all the makings of a thrilling encounter between two counties who are having a
very good championship season to date. Down (SF v Fermanagh):
M McVeigh, J Clarke, B Burns, B Grant; J Lavery, A Molloy, M Cole; S Ward, G McCartan;
L Doyle, B Coulter, C McCrickard; M Walsh, D Gordon, B Murtagh. Fermanagh:
R Gallagher; M Lilly, B Owens, R McCloskey; S McDermott, K Gallagher, N Cox; P
Brewster, M McGrath; T Brewster, Ray Gallagher, R Keenan; R McCabe, S Maguire,
