SENIOR FOOTBALL PANEL 2004 - 18/11/03
Down football manager Paddy O'Rourke
has made wholesale changes after naming his training panel
that begins preparations for next year's NFL campaign.
James McCartan, who scored the goal that
knocked Fermanagh out of the race and booked an Ulster
final place for the Mourne men, is omitted from the 30-man
squad.
McCartan (32) is one of the last remaining
veterans of Down's All-Ireland winning sides of 1991 and
1994. All-Ireland winner Brian Burns is also left out,
despite being a regular starter for both the NFL and the
championship in 2003.
Shane King is also omitted. The former
Fermanagh star struggled to find favour with O'Rourke,
and the oldest player last year at 40, Mickey Linden,
is also left out.
O'Rourke has introduced seven new players.
County champions Bryansford are represented by Gerard
McCrickard and Aidan Shields. Joe Doran (Loughinisland)
comes in after impressing in at minor level, while Stephen
Kearney (Mitchel's), Sean Farrell (Rostrevor) and Peter
Turley (Saval) are also in.
