Attractive league programme in the offing - 25/11/03

The proposed National Football League fixture-list for 2004 is sure to whet the appetites of football fans everywhere.

The fixture-list won’t be finalised until later this week, but already managers and supporters alike are planning ahead for what promises to be one of the most exciting National Leagues yet. The new-look league gets underway on February 1, but it could start a day earlier for Cork and Westmeath if the GAC agrees to a Saturday night floodlit clash at Pairc Ui Rinn.

This is one of the most attractive games of the competition as it pits rival managers Billy Morgan and Paidi O Se against one another. Incidentally, O Se is due to lead Westmeath into battle against his former charges Kerry on March 13 in Mullingar.

New Kerry manager Jack O’Connor will kick-off his campaign with an away assignment against Longford. The Kingdom must also travel to Cork and Tyrone for their second and third round games respectively.

Arguably the most attractive opening round tie is that between holders Tyrone and Dublin. The game is scheduled for Parnell Park, but may yet have to be switched to Croke Park given the huge interest that’s likely to be shown by supporters.

The 2004 National Football League will be played on the following dates: February 1, 8 and 15; March 7, 13 and 20; April 4. Some games may be played on the Saturday of the relevant weekend. Semi-finals on April 10 and final on May 2.
