McCartan to receive personal hearing

2003 Ulster Football Championship - Final

Down star Gregory McCartan will have a personal hearing before the GAC this week in a bid to have his red card overturned and his name cleared to play in Sunday's Ulster SFC final replay against Tyrone. McCartan was harshly sent off during Sunday's thrilling 4-8 to 1-17 drawn match at Clones for throwing the ball at Brian McGuigan and Kerry referee Aidan Mangan has reported him for dangerous play in his match report.

“We have received a copy of the referee's report and it states Gregory behaved in a manner that's dangerous to an opponent but we will contest that is not the case,” said Down secretary Donal McCormack. “It's a pity the referee didn't take the advice of his fellow county man Pat Spillane who suggested that in the cold light of day he should change his report.

“Unfortunately he hasn't altered it so we will prepare our defence accordingly and I am confident Gregory will be cleared of any wrong-doing,” McCormack concluded. The hearing will be on tonight but McCormack is hoping that McCartan will be available for next Sunday's replay at Clones.
